How Can You Ensure Your Medical Problem Isn't Misdiagnosed as a Mental One?

Question:

I have been trying to dissuade Christians from putting so much "faith" in psychology for years.

Since 1993 I have had an illness that Doctors cannot figure out. Extreme fatigue, constant muscle pain, (dull), nearly daily bouts with hypoglycemia, (below 50's), cognitive function problems, etc. I was persuaded to file for disability, due to the nature of this illness. I have to be careful with the amount of energy I expend, or my symptoms become more profound, lasting for a month or more. My first contact with the S.S.A. tells the whole story. The case workers first comment to me was that she was a "psyche" major. The practice of the S.S.A. follows this with a very high frequency. (My father, with 70% loss of vision from glaucoma, was initially told it was a psychological manifestation by the S.S.A. until irrefutable medical evidence prevailed!)

Millions of people are under the authority of medical, and non-medical workers that force a diagnosis of "depression", or "anxiety", upon them, that not only does not exist, but that they cannot defend themselves against. How can these "victims" get proper medical help for their "organic function" problems, (which valid institutes have proven is the fact in more than 85% of those diagnosed with anxiety, stress and depression!), and get off the drugs these professions have forced on them? Can you point to authors that can give me information to defend myself against the speculation of the medical field that so pervasively defer most illnesses to depression, anxiety, stress? How does one end the subjectivity?

I do believe that depression, and anxiety and stress can impair people to a point, and should not be rejected out-of-hand, and is valid in some cases. But I know you will agree with me when I say that this "psychology" is really abused by those who claim to have this "secret" knowledge!

Answer:

Regarding your questions about your illness, no one truly understands the interaction between mind, body and spirit, except to say that they effect and interact with one another in complex ways. We have heard cases of people diagnosed with a mental illness like depression, anxiety, ADD, etc., when later on they came to discover they had a purely medical issue (e.g. a brain tumor). We wholeheartedly agree with your observations about the psych field and its emphasis on quickly diagnosing many medical issues as mental ones without doing proper testing.

Or, the psych field will tend to go the other way and treat truly mental (or spiritual) problems with psych meds that only change the physical part of man.

It is frustrating that so many people are on psych meds when 1) doctors do little to no medical testing on the patient before diagnosis and prescription (just a few minutes of subjective questions and observations), and 2) doctors know little about the adverse effects of these drugs, and how a particular patient will react to them, because they affect so many parts of the brain and cause so many side effects.

We are staunchly against the pharmaceutical drug industry's consumer push to take a dangerous psych drug whenever they feel depressed or anxious or hyperactive. The drug companies have a money-making agenda and the strategy is to convince everyone they have a disorder/disease/illness, then offer the cure in a small package. The Christian's answer is not to run to a dangerous and unproven psych drug, but to do a spiritual inventory, then check medical issues (that have been proven by science), and treat accordingly.

We believe you should only use medicine for medical issues proven by scientific testing. If your doctor is recommending you take psych drugs, we recommend demanding an objective, medical, scientific test that shows you have a chemical imbalance in the brain that these drugs are supposed to cure. The fact is, you will not receive such a test, because one does not exist! Despite public opinion, no chemical imbalance in the brain has been proven to cause mental illness. Doctors just don't understand how brain functions work together to affect mental health.

We recommend you pick up a copy of Dr. Peter Breggin's "Your Drug May Be Your Problem" at www.breggin.com. Although not a Christian, Dr. Breggin is a psychiatrist who suggests using alternative mental health treatments instead of psych drugs.

We've quoted extensively from Breggin's book in the medication chapter of our book Psychology Debunked (www.psychologydebunked.com).
