Reader email regarding Bazler response to CT article:

Lisa and Ryan, I am astounded at what you have said and done in the face of "Christianity"!!!  It is not psychology that ruins people, it is those people who feel it necessary to put someone else down for something they know nothing about!  I am amazed that so much of "Naomi's" article was taken so far out of context that you have the audacity to say that Naomi and her husband relied only on medication and not on God.  How far from the truth can you be!?!?!?

I am writing my own article and I pray that Christianity Today will, once and for all, print the truth.  Because psychology is not the bad guy, misused psychology and arrogant people are the problem.  How dare you assume that you know Naomi's story and what she has been through.  How dare you assume that Naomi gave up on God and went to rely on doctors and medication.  She did not!!  I repeat, she did NOT!!!!

Your twisted truth causes far more problems in mental patients than psychology ever could.  Your "truth" as you call it, only puts people further behind.  No, do not debunk psychology, let God use it as "HE" sees fit.  Please do not pretend to walk in my shoes, because you have not.  You have no clue what we, the patients go through!!  I've been there, and I've done that, and I have found a better way!  It is Jesus.

DO you think that God is so small that He cannot use whatever means, or whomever He chooses to use to get His work done???  Yes, God even uses medication and psychologists.  Psychology is not all bad, you are throwing the baby out with the bath water.  Please abandon your head in the sand ostrich way of approaching things.  You are doing far more damage than the psychologists are.  Your article and book have just sent hundreds of Christians to prison, a prison of depression and hopelessness. Simply by looking at the title and headings on your book, they think that getting help is wrong, and if they were a good Christian, they would not be this way.  How wrong can you be?  I am shaken and saddened by this approach.  Your book is being used by the enemy to destroy Christians who suffer and need the help of good counseling and psychology.  I am shaking, and I am angry that you would attack Naomi in such a way.  You know not what you speak of...

Please pray about what you are doing.  I am shaking I am so upset that this is even happening in a Christian publication, and in this century.  I am highly disappointed in both of you!!! --D.S., Internet

Bazler response:

Please understand our motives in sending this CT article to our readers:

We did not attack the woman in this article, but the teaching it was espousing. The article effectively convinced others that their problems could be from a psychology-created disorder (that is subjectively applied by a psychologist), instead of from a spiritual or physical issue. We think it is tragic that this woman and her husband have been duped into thinking their problems stem from a disorder, and that the cure is psychological treatment. Where is God in all this, except to say that all things worked together for good? He wants to be much more for them--their sole sufficiency--and we want this for both this couple and all who have read the article. That is why we do this ministry - to steer Christians back to God and away from psychology, a worldly study of the soul that plunders and takes captive (Col 2:8).

Please also remember Lisa's credentials: Lisa has undergraduate and graduate degrees in counseling psychology and has worked in the helping profession for 10 years. She is more than qualified to speak about psychology and its harmful influence on the church.

My foundational question to you: If God says we are complete in Christ (Col. 2:10), then why does He need psychology to help Him out? Is bipolar disorder too difficult for God? Does He need man's expert help here? Why must He use psychology at all, especially when it teaches ways of viewing man that are completely opposed to His Word in the Bible?

You say you have found a better way, and it's Jesus. Praise God for that. Then why do you need to look to psychology, which literally means, "study of the soul?" Isn't God the expert on the soul? Wouldn't He give us everything we needed to know about the soul in His Word? Why do we need the world to tell us how to study the soul, when we already have the answers in the Bible?

In case you have any inclination to believe that psychiatric medications are good, go to this psychiatrist's website (Dr. Tracy) and read these true stories of people whose lives have been ruined by psych drugs: http://www.drugawareness.org/Archives/Survivors/survivor_index.html.

And in case you have any inclination to believe that psychotherapy is helpful and effective, go to this psychology website from the UK. This article is written by a psychiatrist in London.

Note these are not Christian ministry people, but MEDICAL DOCTORS who are saying that psych meds and therapy are useless at best, and extremely dangerous at worst! This is exactly what we said in the CT article.

Finally, you say that our book implies that "getting help is wrong, and if they were a good Christian, they would not be this way." Have you read the book? If so, you would have seen that we say getting help is GOOD, as long as it is from the right source, i.e. a pastor or godly, mature Christian friend. And you would have seen that we say frequently throughout the book that we ALL experience depression, anxiety, etc. It is perfectly normal and human! But the solution is not drugs and therapy, the solution is drawing upon the infinite resources of God's sufficient grace.

...the last 100 pages of the book are dedicated to encouraging help seekers and sufferers to seek the Lord for His overcoming, abundant, and satisfying life. Your false accusation, "Your article and book have just sent hundreds of Christians to prison, a prison of depression and hopelessness" is unfounded.

Please read the book... It will encourage you to seek the Lord as your sole source of help. You will find that He is all you need.

With love in Christ,

Ryan and Lisa
