Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ May 2004 |
This month we take a look at the Deanna Laney case through the lens of Scripture. Deanna Laney methodically bashed in her three sons' heads with a large rock in May 2003, killing two in her backyard and permanently injuring the third in his crib. The jury found her innocent by reason of insanity and sentenced her to a state hospital. We answer the question, How should we treat criminals who plead insanity, from a biblical standpoint?
Also in this issue, we answer a website visitor's request to clarify what areas of psychology we are debunking and what areas we are not.
We hope you enjoy the issue and forward it to others.

Should Criminals with Insanity Pleas Get Hospital Stays Instead of Jail Time? |
Last April, Texas resident Deanna Laney was acquitted of all charges in the barbaric murder of two of her young sons and permanent head injury of her 14-month old baby boy. Her plea was insanity - not knowing the difference between right and wrong - due to severe mental illness. How should we treat criminals who plead insanity, from a biblical standpoint?

London Psychiatrist Cites Numerous Studies Showing Psychotherapy is Ineffective In this eye-opening article, a London psychiatrist cites numerous studies over the past 50 years showing it doesn't matter which type of psychotherapy you have, or even if you receive therapy at all: you will improve at the same rate. The article also states that patients treated by untrained people did just as well as patients treated by trained and experienced psychotherapists. So you could get just as much benefit confiding in a friend for free, than you would get in consulting a psychotherapist for $100 an hour! Read more about the details of these studies. http://www.psychminded.co.uk/news/news2003/march03/Growth%20of%20therapy%20tells%20us%20something%20about%20the%20breakdown%20of%20relationships%20and%20the%20decline%20of%20religion%20and%20the%20nuclear%20family.htm

Psychology literally means "study of the soul." However, these days the word "psychology" is being overused in many different disciplines beyond traditional mental help (educational psychology, business psychology, health psychology, etc.). A website visitor asks, "What is your opinion of other branches of psychology outside counseling and psychiatry?"
