Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ June 2004 |
This month we have discovered an unusual new psychological disorder being used in a court defense called "post traumatic slave syndrome."
We have also included an article from Dr. Opal Reddin, retired Professor from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, who analyzes the concept of generational curses in light of Scripture. If someone you know believes they may have a generational curse brought on by family sins, this article will surely pull down that stronghold in their life!
We also answer the question, How do you honor your father and mother when they are not saved?
We hope you enjoy the issue and forward it to others.

Man who abused and murdered 2-year old son pleads "post traumatic slave syndrome" |
A Portland lawyer is claiming that Isaac Bynum was justified in beating, whipping and killing his son Ryshawn because he suffered from "post traumatic slave syndrome," a new mental disorder affecting blacks in the United States caused by past generations of slavery and abuse trauma that was never treated. Those who suffer from this multigenerational trauma often exhibit "self-destructive, violent or aggressive behavior," according to the inventor of the disorder, Joy DeGruy-Leary, who is an Assistant Professor in the Portland State University Graduate School of Social Work. Does the Bible support the concept of generational curses? Generational curses—the idea taken from Exodus 20:5-6 that God punishes people for the sins of their ancestors to the third and fourth generation—has been applied to the church by popular teachers and authors. Are born-again Christians punished for the sins of their ancestors, and are they cursed to repeat these sins? Can we blame our problems and sins on our parents and grandparents before us, as psychology would have us do? Dr. Opal Reddin, retired Professor from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, explains the fallacy of generational curses and the mercy and new life we have in Christ, who became a curse and took our punishment. http://www.macgregorministries.org/cult_groups/generationalcurses.html

Lately we have received questions from readers about the practical implications of honoring your father and mother when one or both are not saved. This is a difficult but common situation that Jesus knew we would face. Fortunately, He gives us the answers in His Word. In this Q&A we combine portions of different responses to these questions to paint a picture of what the Bible teaches about honoring an unsaved parent.
