Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ July 2004 |
Hello again. In this month's newsletter, we discuss the beliefs and practices of the late Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung--founder of personality type theory--and the modern-day version of his theory in the popular Myers-Briggs Type IndicatorŪ* (MBTIŪ*) personality test. We also evaluate the MBTI's soundness as a scientific method and as a practical help.
There is still a remnant of pastors who are not succumbing to the temptation of psychotherapy and psychotropic drugs. We highlight three of these pastors in this issue. One rejected the MBTI as a church leadership training tool; one has posted a 13-question Q&A on why a Christian should reject psychology; and one has started to preach on the emptiness and futility of psychology to his congregation.
While this is encouraging, please pray for those you know in church leadership who have been taken captive by psychology's worldly philosophies (Col. 2:8).
We hope you enjoy the issue and forward to others.
Yours in Christ,
Lisa and Ryan Bazler

Most people have heard of the MBTIŪ*, or Myers-Briggs Type IndicatorŪ*--a personality type classification test used by millions to help them with job placement and performance, personal relationships, self-analysis and even spirituality--but most people do not know that it uses the psychological type theories of Carl Jung, a mystical occultist who frequently communicated with a "spirit guide" named Philemon. Read more about Jung and the MBTI.

Is the MBTIŪ scientific and effective?
The company who owns the MBTIŪ*, or Myers-Briggs Type IndicatorŪ*, claim that the test is "the most accurate personality type assessment" and that it helps "build understanding and transform lives." Is this popular test grounded in science, and does it really help transform lives? David J. Pittenger, Ph.D. in psychology and assistant professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Marietta College, helps us answer these questions.
