PSYCHOLOGY DEBUNKED

Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ

August 2004

Dear Psychology Debunked Reader,

In this issue we tackle a variety of aspects of psychology, from the American Psychological Association's recent endorsement of same-sex marriage, to the usefulness of personality tests to the Christian, to the widespread influence of "psychologians," to the myth of the disorder-causing chemical imbalance.

We have also added a new "Back Issues" feature to the newsletter. Each newsletter will now have links to all back issues so you can easily refer to them from one place.

We hope you enjoy the issue and forward it to others - they can subscribe to this monthly newsletter for free by simply emailing lisaandryan@psychologydebunked.com with "Add" in the subject line.

Yours in Christ,

Lisa and Ryan Bazler

Psychologists Join the Gay Marriage Bandwagon

In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from their DSM list of mental disorders in response to political pressure from homosexual lobbies. So it is no surprise that the American Psychological Association (APA) recently announced its support of same-sex marriage (see press release at http://www.apa.org/releases/gaymarriage.html). What is surprising, though, is how some Christians still look to psychotherapists and psychiatrists for help with marriage and family issues. Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote an article for Baptist Press on the APA’s politically motivated and anti-Christian decision, saying, "this resolution and its ideological underpinnings demonstrate that the modern psychotherapeutic worldview is directly at odds with the biblical worldview of Christianity." Are the MBTI® and other personality tests helpful to the Christian?

In last month’s newsletter, we looked at the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®* personality test in terms of its demonic, Jungian psychological roots (see http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0407_Jung.htm) and its claims of accuracy and effectiveness in career planning and job placement (see http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0407_MBTI.htm). This month we answer the question, "are the MBTI and other personality tests helpful for the Christian to better understand self, relationships, and spirituality?"

"Finding and Keeping Mental Health"

This excellent and brief article by former pastor Kenneth L. Scribner, M.Div., introduces a new breed of spiritual helper that has risen in these last days to deliver us from our psychological diseases and illnesses: the "psychologian."
