As another school year begins, we find our society pushing psychotherapy and psychiatric drugs more and more upon children for their ADD/ADHD, depression and other mental problems. In this issue we take a look at the Illinois school system's forced mental health screening program that could spread nationwide, as well as Washington's crackdown on drug companies to help slow the increase in drug-induced teen suicides. The story of Brandon and his Zoloft-induced suicide makes a tragic case in point.
This month also includes a letter from Rob Yardley, a board elder at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa (Pastor Chuck Smith), who convincingly answers the questions, Does our children’s misbehavior stem from an Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) caused by chemical imbalances in the brain? Should we give our children Ritalin and other stimulant drugs to control their behavior? What does God’s Word have to say about misbehaving children, and how to handle them?

In July 2003, the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health recommended the government provide nationwide "early mental health screening, assessment, and referral to services" for women and children ages 0 – 18. A year later, the state of Illinois followed suit by forcing mental screening and diagnosis on pregnant women and school children. This will open the door for a massive increase in disorder diagnoses, psychotherapy, and psychotropic drug use in our children and pregnant women—not just in Illinois but in your state as well. Responding to an increasing trend in suicidal behavior in children and teens taking antidepressant drugs, lawmakers in Washington are now pushing drug companies for full disclosure of drug trial test results to the FDA and medical community. Of the 15 studies done on antidepressants for children, 12 showed negative outcomes but only the three positive studies were released to the public. Read more.
