Pregnant Chicago Woman Experiences Mandatory Mental Health Screening Firsthand

Reader Letter, 9/25/04

"I sure would like to contribute to make people aware that this [mandatory mental health screening] is really occurring.

"I just switched medical facilities because of a move to a new house in the Chicagoland area.  Before this I had a Christian doctor and nurse midwife practitioner that were such a blessing thru a 1st pregnancy, that had many complications in the end.

"The new place I found was staffed with many Christian doctors but none of them can afford the malpractice licenses that accompany being an OBGYN.  So I chose a well-respected doctor who had been in practice for over twenty years.

"Before I could meet with this new doctor I had to come in to fill out my OBGYN prep-paperwork.  I thought this was mainly insurance info., hospital stay information for birthing center, etc.

"Little did I know I would be filling out a very long questionnaire that had only 50% medical questions and the other 50% personal questions.  The questions did not have an optional notation next to them.  They ranged from:
       * Is your husband abusive
       * Was this pregnancy planned
       * Are you sad that you are pregnant
       * Were you depressed in previous pregnancies
       * What is your religious preference
       * Something like do you like being a mother?

(I remember in the previous pregnancy that this was an optional part, but not any longer.)

"I wish I made a copy of it, I will see if I can get one... This stuff just seemed irrelevant to be of their knowledge.  I joked with the nurse, that it seemed like a psychological exam on paper.  She did not laugh.  I commented to my friend right away about the personal questions.  Then when I saw your article, I knew I was no longer nutz, but that I was indeed given a written psychological exam.

"The thing that most scared me in your article was about the children.  This is something as a mom I will keep close to my heart in prayer as my children grow up in a psychobabble society.  I am thankful my husband is on the same page Biblically with me in this matter, and we are so blessed by your ministry Lisa & Ryan.  My husband picked up your book and read it in one day.  Now we pass it on to others."
