PSYCHOLOGY DEBUNKED

Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ

November 2004

Dear Psychology Debunked Reader,

Hello again, and Happy Thanksgiving! With sayings like "Happy Turkey Day" and all the trappings of the holiday, we can sometimes forget that this day was founded to give thanks to God for all His blessings upon us and our country.

Giving thanks is something we can do every day of the year, and it's a great cure for depression! God gives us a three-pronged cure for depression in three short verses:

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thess. 5:16-18

That's it! No therapy, no drugs, just praise, prayer and thanksgiving, all the time. Before you know it, depression will flee and peace and joy will flood your heart and mind. And it's free, with no side affects!

In this month's issue we take a look at a curious new psychological disorder, "post-election selection trauma," and again warn of the government-imposed mandatory mental health screening that will forever change our schools and doctor's offices. We also introduce a timely and important new book by James Sundquist, Who's Driving the Purpose Driven Church?, along with links to a chapter on personality testing and a website for ordering.

We hope you enjoy the issue and forward it to others - they can subscribe to this monthly newsletter for free by simply emailing lisaandryan@psychologydebunked.com with "Add" in the subject line.

Yours in Christ,

Lisa and Ryan Bazler

Disorder of the Month: Post-Election Selection Trauma

Just when we thought the psychology industry had reached the bounds of absurdity a month ago with their newest proposed psychological disorder "pre-election stress disorder"--the condition of experiencing high stress in deciding which presidential candidate to choose--the American Health Association has invented what they call "post-election selection trauma" in response to a Kerry volunteer's suicide in New York City and many traumatized Kerry supporters in Florida. One Florida psychologist is performing intense "election therapy" for those affected. Read more...

Another Reason to Home-School: Government-Imposed Mandatory Mental Health Screening

Last July, Illinois became the first state to require mental health screening for pregnant women and children ages 0 - 18 (see http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0409_screening.htm for full story, and http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0410_letters.htm for one pregnant Chicago-area resident's account of her screening), and other states will soon follow. Your or your child's positive responses to a subjective mental health questionnaire could result in your clinic or school labeling you with a psychological disorder and treating you with psychotherapy and psychiatric medications. Refusal to comply with their recommended treatments can be considered child abuse. This article by Pastor Chuck Baldwin sounds an alarm of the seriousness of this issue, no matter what your political persuasion.

New Sundquist book Who's Driving the Purpose Driven Church? reveals Rick Warren's psychological approach to ministry

In the last issue we reviewed some striking similarities between the unbiblical teachings of psychiatrist Carl Jung and Purpose Driven Life author Rick Warren (see http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0410_home.htm). The "P" in Warren’s SHAPE program (a.k.a. Discovery 301 class) encourages participants to use personality profiles and tests to help them best serve God. Author and apologist James Sundquist exposes the psychological roots and self-centered focus of Warren's program in Chapter 11 of his new book Who’s Driving the Purpose Driven Church? Besides laying bare the subjective nature of personality tests, Sundquist makes it clear that using a manmade test to measure natural bents in order to serve a spiritual God is unbiblical and unnecessary.

Son Suffers from Antidepressants Taken During Mother's Pregnancy

Mother of eight concludes, "Antidepressants do not actually heal the human mind. If they did, then we would see a decline in depression across our nation, but we do not. Please look at the possibility that there is another way to treat this growing problem that, I believe, SSRIs only mask." Read the full story...

Q&A

A reader asks, "I would like to know what you believe (or not believe) about dyslexia. Is it real? Is it another psychology myth?"
