Reader's bipolar mother on Lithium for 30 years; experienced kidney damage, mini-strokes and near-death toxicity before withdrawing successfully

Reader Letter, 10/27/04

I did purchase your book and just finished reading it this morning.  I thought it was very interesting and biblical.  Even though I told you earlier that I didn't believe in psychology, I was amazed at how much psychology had crept into my own life and thinking and how I had just "bought" it without even realizing what it was.  It alarms me at how much the world and even the church has embraced psychological teaching as "truth".  I know of way too many Christians receiving treatment and medication for mental illness and just accepting it as a fact of life...most [believe they have] a chemical imbalance that they inherited and can't help...Thanks for writing the book and exposing so many of the enemy's lies with the Truth of God's Word.

My 64-year-old mother has supposedly been "manic-depressive" (now "bipolar") for 30+ years.  She has taken lithium for most of the 30 years, experiencing approximately only 3 serious episodes requiring 2-3 week hospitalizations during that time.  They occurred every time she tried to stop the lithium, whether on her own or supervised.  The first episode did not occur until after a marriage breakup and an abortion...my aunt suspects childhood sexual abuse, also.  Her second husband committed suicide...lots of problems growing up...too many details to mention.  Of course, psychology has only worsened things by telling her to focus on all of the good things she has done.

She is now a Christian.  She has become active in the church and is participating in weekly ladies bible studies.

In spring of this year she became toxic from the lithium (interacted badly with Accupril for her blood pressure control) and had to stop it.  There is permanent kidney damage.

My mother came by and picked up your book this afternoon to read it herself.  She is actually off of the Lithium completely and it has been out of her bloodstream, according to the blood tests, for months.  In thinking back, I guess she did go off it gradually.  She had become so toxic from it that she almost died.  She was staggering, had slurred speech, was nauseous, even vomiting occasionally, some diarrhea, had virtually NO energy, very tired and sleepy, extremely poor coordination...She looked and acted like an alcoholic on a terrible binge and she has never drank...It was awful.  The doctors started lowering the dosage until they decided that she had to stop it or lose her kidney function completely.  I do believe the Lithium combined with the Accupril would have killed her if she hadn't gotten off of the Lithium.  It was also discovered that she has had numerous "mini" strokes.  I wonder now if the Lithium could have played a part in causing them.

She is okay now, except for much more emotional than what most would consider normal.  Sometimes she has periods of what most would call "mania" just not extreme.  She had her last extreme "episode" requiring hospitalization about 26 years ago.  I'm not sure what will happen, but she says she wants to trust God to handle the situation and not take medication if it can be avoided.

Please pray for our family.  Maybe God will deliver my mother completely from all of this and we can proclaim His glory even more.  I know it is not too hard for Him - with God all things are possible.

Thanks for responding.  It's great to know there are caring people like you ministering to the saints.  It's how we are known to be disciples of Christ, if we have love for one another.
