Psychotherapy Professor Responds to Student's Biblical Model of Mental Help

Reader Letter, 12/15/04 and 1/15/05

I just wanted to touch base with you and let you know what grade I received on "my" personal theory to psychotherapy.  We just received the grades on our papers today.  Keep in mind, there are approximately 30 graduate students in this class.  Our professor decided to score the papers on a scale of zero to four.  Zero being the lowest grade, or the equivalent of an 'F' and 4 being the highest grade, which is an 'A'.  Out of all the scores, I gathered that he issued only a few 4's, however the bulk of the students received 3's.  To my knowledge, no one received a 2, 1 or zero.  (No one but me.)  I received a score of a 1, which is the equivalent of a D.  Wow!  I could have slapped two pages together in 30 minutes, made minimal effort and would have likely ended up with the same score!

We were instructed to document our personal theory from which we intend to build a future practice for therapy.  When asked for any specifics, [the professor] would only remark that there were no specific guidelines, but that we were to build our own theory and that it could be an original or eclectic one.  It was important for us to include or cover various topics, such as: our world view, view of mankind, treatment objectives, and so on.  I included all of those, and then offered support for them.

The professor wrote the following on my paper:

"[Dan], I respect, even admire, your philosophy of life based on your strong religious belief.  However, I feel you may have chosen the wrong profession.  What you have described can in no way be described as psychotherapy; it is a combination of pastoral counseling and religious instruction.  Seriously, have you considered attending seminary and studying pastoral counseling [?]  While beautifully written, your paper is seriously flawed as a theory of counseling and psychotherapy.  Please feel free to visit and discuss this further."

Wow!  I don't think he could have been more clear!  Ostensibly, he and those in this field, wish to continue to deceive man by arguing that man can provide healing and direction separate of Christ... I'm not mad though...Praise God that He is using me and directing my path!

I Thessalonians 5:18: "Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

If you are curious, I have withdrawn from the psychology program.  There is no need for me to be there, as you well know.  God has used you, and others like you (not to mention the guidance of the Holy Spirit) to reveal to me that I, as a Christian, have no business there.

"Dan", Internet

Editor’s Note: How ironic that an unbelieving psych professor understands the impossibility of someone with Christian beliefs to practice psychotherapy. Those in the church who still believe that psychology can help the Christian should heed this professor’s advice.
