Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ May 2005 |
The Bible calls our heavenly Father "the God of all comfort:"
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ." 2 Corinthians 1:3-5, NKJV
Not only does God provide ALL the comfort we need to sustain and strengthen us in our suffering, but this verse says that God comforts us so that we can then comfort others through the power of Christ in us. This is the central theme of biblical counseling within the body of Christ: reliance upon God (not man) and then focus on others (not self). This contrast between the biblical and the psychological becomes clear this month as we take a look at "Christian" psychotherapy, "Christian" recovery and OCD and the Christian.

U.K. now outlaws use of all SSRI antidepressants for under-18s |
In December 2003, the U.K. outlawed prescriptions of all SSRI antidepressants except Prozac for children under 18. The U.K. has now decided that Prozac should also be banned for this age group. On April 25, the U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) determined that Prozac, along with all other SSRI antidepressants, can cause suicidal and aggressive behavior in children and adolescents. Restraint of the new millennium: the chemical straightjacket |
Children and adolescents in youth residential treatment centers are being forcibly drugged against their will, according to this investigation by the Columbus Dispatch. The investigation found that treatment center workers frequently use dangerous combinations and dosages of potent, mind-altering psychiatric drugs to manage children. Some pass out for hours or days from the drugs, while others hallucinate or walk around like zombies. According to the article, "A 5-year-old boy… was so doped up that he couldn’t stop batting the air, complaining about imaginary bugs and smacking his lips." Read the full article.

Psychiatrist blames Utah’s #1 suicide rate on religion--not high antidepressant use |
In this article, a Utah psychiatrist explains why he thinks Utah has the highest suicide rate of any state in the nation: Mormonism. Psychiatrists opposing religion is nothing new, since one holds we are animals controlled by brain chemicals, and the other holds that we are spiritual beings with conscience and free will. The author writes, "It is not unusual now to hear spiritual leaders talk about chemical imbalances of the brain being responsible for unwanted actions, even criminal acts. Who can blame them? For decades they have been pounded with lies and deceit." Read the full article, which includes a brief history of psychiatry’s anti-religious roots.

Christian psychologist / pastor offers therapy, labels and meds over Bible and prayer |
During a recent Psychology Debunked church presentation, I (Ryan) had the opportunity to meet Larry, a kind Christian man who told me about his experience with so-called "Christian" psychology. $700 later with no trace of Bible reading or prayer, the Christian psychologist / pastor had provided talk therapy, labeled him an angry person, and recommended antidepressants before Larry decided he’d had enough. Read his story in his own words.
