PSYCHOLOGY DEBUNKED

Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ

June 2005

Dear Psychology Debunked Reader,

Isn't it great that God is always there when we call out to Him? Night or day, when we call on His name, He hears us and comforts us. He meets us where we're at, and gives us what we need to go on.

This month's issue focuses on depression. When King David got depressed, he remembered God, put his hope in God, praised God and prayed to God:

"Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me; therefore I will remember You... The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me--a prayer to the God of my life." Psalm 42:5-6, NKJV

We can, like David, call out to God in our times of depression. God's grace is always sufficient, always available, and best of all, always free with no side effects!

Also, a note of thanks to all of you who prayed and sent words of comfort after Lisa's near-death experience last Easter. I am pleased to report that Lisa has fully recovered. Everyone in the Bazler house is happy that Mommy's back.

Illinois: the first Brave New State?

In July 2004, Illinois began the federally-commissioned, mandatory mental health screening of pregnant mothers and children ages 0 – 18. A year later, the governor of Illinois is now reviewing the formal "Children's Mental Health Plan" defining how the screening will actually work. This article describes what you can expect when mandatory mental health screening comes to your town.

Aliah Gleason: Poster child for what can happen when the state intrudes on your child’s mental health

13-year-old Aliah Gleason, a normal girl from Austin, Texas, had no idea that her answers to a mental health-screening questionnaire would land her in a mental hospital. After reviewing her answers, a psychologist called her parents, saying she showed a high suicide risk. They agreed to have Aliah evaluated. Six weeks later, a child protection worker seized Aliah from school against her father’s will, and the police escorted her to a state mental hospital, where she was forced to stay for nine months of restraints and 12 psychotropic drugs. Her parents couldn’t contact her for five months. This nightmare will become all-too-familiar if the Illinois screenings become law and other states follow suit. Please pray for mandatory mental health screening to stop, and warn others to refuse to allow their children to take such a screening test. You can read Aliah’s full story here.

JAMA report: Suicide rate unchanged between 1992 and 2003, despite more antidepressant treatments

Contrary to what the drug companies, the psychiatry industry, and groups like TeenScreen would have us believe, antidepressants do not help prevent suicides, according to a recent Journal of the American Medical Association report. The report states, "Despite a dramatic increase in treatment, no significant decrease occurred in suicidal thoughts, plans, gestures, or attempts in the United States during the 1990s." Read about this groundbreaking report here.

Duke University study finds lower depression rates for those who attend religious services one or more times per week

Are religious people less depressed than non-religious people? "Religion and Depression in the Community," the first in a series of three Duke University studies presented here, found that depression rates are lower for those who attend religious services once a week or more. Read the full study.

Woman on Paxil: "I believed that Satan was living in me... as though my body had been taken over by evil spirits."

This woman experienced side effects just 10 minutes after starting a small, 2.5mg dose of the antidepressant Paxil. The drug began a three-year nightmare and "changed [her] brain chemistry… so that [she] craved death in a way [she] never would have been able to before." Six years later, she says, "I am once again the way God made me. (I also completely lost my connection to God on the drug.)... I feel lucky not to have lost my whole life." Read her horrific story.

Q&A

"How would you respond to a Christian who fervently prays, is not self absorbed, gives of himself daily, and is still under a cloud of depression? Is this person lacking faith, and would antidepressants be appropriate here?" See our response.

Letters

This reader, on and off antidepressant medication for 10 years, had been experiencing yelling, cursing voices in her head about God and the Holy Spirit. After feeling "like I’m losing who I am, and who God created me to be," she decided to return to full reliance upon God. She now says, "I feel like I’m returning to my senses." See the email exchange between the two of us, where we respond to her question, "Do you believe that demons can actually get into our thoughts and cause these crazy thoughts out of nowhere?"
