Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ July 2005 |
If anyone in America wasn’t aware of the ongoing debate over the legitimacy and dangers of psychiatric drugs, they are now, thanks to the recent Tom Cruise interviews on NBC’s Today Show and others.
We’ve dedicated this issue to these interviews, commentaries from us and others in the field, and two major (coincidental?) announcements from the FDA on July 1st warning of an increase in suicidal thoughts and behavior for adults—not just children—taking antidepressants, and an increase in suicidal thoughts and behavior for anyone taking stimulants for ADHD.
While the FDA warns us of these suicidal dangers, TeenScreen programs are popping up in public schools, claiming their universal screenings--where children are sent to drug-prescribing psychiatrists--will actually prevent suicides. In this issue we’ve described the TeenScreen program in detail, and included sample school letters you and your friends can use to protect your children from psychiatric drugging without parental consent.
Psychiatric labels and drugs are taking over our country, and we’re buying it. Please forward this newsletter to others so they will know the truth when a psychologist, faculty member, or family doctor tells them they have a mental disorder and need to take medications for their "illness." That time is coming sooner than we think.
Yours in Christ,
Ryan and Lisa Bazler

Lately, Tom Cruise is looking more like the alien invaders from outer space than the superhero who saves his little girl from destruction. So how did this heated debate surrounding Tom Cruise all start, anyway? In a nutshell, Brooke Shields, in promoting her new book Down Came the Rain, announced that the antidepressant drug Paxil "saved her life" and helped her battle through post-partum depression. Later, Tom Cruise publicly expressed that her comments were "irresponsible" due to the current psychiatric drug epidemic, and that alternatives like vitamins and exercise were the answer.
But that was just the beginning...

FDA declares risk of suicidality in adults being treated with antidepressant medications |
Last year, the FDA required a "black-box" label for all SSRI antidepressants, warning of the possibility of increased suicidal thoughts and behavior in children. Now, the FDA is investigating these reported effects in adults taking SSRI antidepressants. The FDA report (accessible here http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/advisory/SSRI200507.htm) states, "Adults being treated with antidepressant medications, particularly those being treated for depression, should be watched closely for worsening of depression and for increased suicidal thinking or behavior. Close watching may be especially important early in treatment, or when the dose is changed, either increased or decreased" (emphasis ours). Read the full article.

FDA probing ADHD drug side effects, including suicidal thoughts |
The FDA has found that the ADHD drugs Ritalin and Concerta are associated with reports of suicidal thoughts, hallucinations and violent behavior. This finding has prompted the FDA to investigate all ADHD drugs containing methylphenidate, for possible drug relabeling to include more serious warnings. Health Canada has already pulled Adderall XP (an ADHD drug) from the market due to reports of sudden deaths, heart-related deaths and strokes in children and adults. The FDA has also recently published a study showing an increased risk of cancer for adults who took Ritalin when they were children. Read the full article.

TeenScreen: Gateway to labeling and drugging your school children |
Universal mental health screening of every child in America’s schools. This is the federally dictated New Freedom Commission on Mental Health’s recommendation for improving the mental health of our country—preventing mental illness by treating it early in life. The commission’s recommendation is Columbia University’s TeenScreen program, already in 43 states and growing fast.
So why is TeenScreen a wolf in sheep’s clothing? Here is must-know information your school and doctors won’t tell you.
