Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ September 2005 |
What comes to mind when you hear the phrase, "filled with the Spirit?" There are many opinions, but the Bible explains what being filled with the Spirit looks like:
"And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be (continually) filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ..." Ephesians 5:18-21, NKJV (parentheses ours)
According to these verses, when a born-again Christian is being continually filled with the Spirit, they are speaking and hearing the Word of God, praising Him in song, and giving thanks to Him in prayer. Preaching, praising and praying will refill you afresh with the Holy Spirit of God, and produce the good fruit and good mental health we all desire!
This month's issue includes an article by Dr. Opal Reddin on what it means to be filled and refilled with the Spirit. We also include a Q&A from a reader who asks, "How do you know you have the Holy Spirit?" where we differentiate between receiving the Holy Spirit's initial filling at salvation and receiving the Spirit's giftings as a born-again Christian.
Yours in Christ,
Ryan and Lisa Bazler

In this captivating interview, Robert Whitaker, Investigative Journalist and author of "Mad in America," gives straight talk about why mental illness is on the rise despite the widespread use of psychiatric medications to treat it. His comments on pharmaceutical industry behavior, drug side effects and FDA cover-ups—comments you will never hear in the mainstream media—are right-on and need-to-know. Read the interview here.

Dr. Opal Reddin on the Filling and Refilling of the Holy Spirit |
It can be easy to forget that the same Holy Spirit who filled us at conversion wants to continually refill us throughout our Christian life. We now have access to the power, wisdom and counsel of God living inside us, making psychological counsel and self-reliance unnecessary. Just like a car depends on gas and a flashlight depends on batteries, we need to depend on the Holy Spirit to live effectively. This article by Dr. Opal Reddin, ordained Assemblies of God minister and Distinguished Professor Emer. in Biblical Education at Central Bible College, explains the concept of the filling and refilling of the Holy Spirit, and cites biblical examples of how to get refilled.

Update on Pastor’s Son |
Thank you for your prayers for the pastor’s son we emailed you about last month (see www.psychologydebunked.com/email0509_pastorsson.htm). We have great news to report: his son was released from county mental health after 72 hours. This was a miracle—we were expecting a 14-day hold, and after 14 days of numerous psychiatric drugs, the side effects alone are usually enough to convince the professionals that a patient is mentally ill and in need of their long-term care. He was transferred to a Christian rehab center where he is now getting discipled and surrounded by other Christians twenty-four hours a day—drug-free. Praise God for his deliverance from the "system" and the drugs. We believe God has a big plan for this young man. Please continue to pray for him to stay in the program and want the good things God has for him. Please also pray for wisdom and clear direction for his mom and dad.

A pastor tells us about his conversion from psychology to Christianity—a story very similar to ours. After essentially being ousted from his Masters-level Counseling Psychology program for insisting that the nature of man is sinful, he became a counseling pastor. He says, "I had more success in my counseling sessions by counseling right from the Word than my some of my friends and fellow students had with their Masters." Read his encouraging story.
