Reader Letter, 9/14/05

I have a Psychology background and worked on my Masters in Counseling Psychology at the State University at Buffalo, NY.  I gave my heart to Christ in my 2nd year of my Masters work.  I left before completing my Ed.M Degree because I started to write my research papers from a Christian view.

Example: my Common Core Class (need to pass to graduate) the theme for the semester's 3 papers (the class taught you how to write a Thesis or your Dissertation) was "What is the nature of Man?" Was that a loaded question for a newly saved graduate student.  So I wrote from a biblical perspective - "the nature of man is sin......"  My professor for that class was also the V.P. for Academic Affairs.  He would not give me a grade for the paper because as he said, " You have no business writing anything from a religious point if you are not in the ministry or studying for a religious order.  So after about 2 semesters of professors telling me I could not write anything from a religious perspective and $12,000.00 in student loans, I decided it was time to call it quits.  So I left with about 9 credits to go toward my Masters.

People have had asked me, "why not go back now that you're in the ministry and finish your degree."  As tempting as that is -- I don't feel I need a Masters Degree when I now KNOW the MASTER of masters and doctorates!

[It] tells you where our Education system was in the late 70's, early 80's - I left UB in May of "81.  Was saved in Jan. '80 and was brought on staff at the Church I got saved at in Buffalo (while in Grad School) in Mar. '83 to do the churches Counseling!  I had more success in my counseling sessions by counseling right from the Word than my some of my friends and fellow student had with their Masters.

I had one friend in my Masters Classes who came to visit me at the Church I was on staff at to see how my Counseling sessions were going.  He was on staff at the Children's Hospital in Buffalo at the time and he was so frustrated and was seeing very little success in his counseling.  He said to me "how are you getting all these great results and you never finished your degree and I have a Masters and License to Counsel and I barely get a 20 % success rate."  I told him the only good thing that is taught in these college courses in Psychology is to teach us the art of listening and listening for the right cues and red flags in a persons life BUT the ANSWERS are found in the Word of God - the Manufacturer's Manual for Life.  I told him he would no more send his Dodge car to a VW dealer to get fixed or go to an Animal Doctor to get a physical than why do we rely on man's ideas and concepts about the "inner man" -- his heart, mind, emotions and spirit/soul -- when we can't even touch the surface of what we are on our own.  We MUST go to the Creator/Manufacturer to get the real answers to how we were made and purposed to function.  He was blown away!  It was like a light bulb lit up his brain.

Man has to make something so simple so complicated because we are so impressed with how we solve or discover the answer to a problem or situation -- when the Lord has had and HAS BEEN the ANSWER all along.

AN, Pastor
