Exposing Psychology, Exalting Christ November 2005 |
Welcome to the November issue! Quiz question: Where in the Bible is the verse, "believe in yourself?"
Give up? Answer: Nowhere. But the Bible does say,
"He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered." Prov. 28:26, NKJV
and
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." Prov. 3:5-6, NKJV
This month we’ll see how the psychological gospel of selfism is being shouted from the rooftops—or should we say, the steepletops. We also include professional articles explaining why the chemical imbalance theory of psychiatry continues to lose ground among researchers despite decades of blind belief.
In our Q&A, we answer the question, How do you handle a hyperactive son without psychiatric medications? And don’t miss the article about nine new disorders that may make you officially mentally ill!
Yours in Christ,
Ryan and Lisa Bazler

That’s the message of Purpose Driven Life author and pastor Rick Warren in his article in the March 2005 issue of the Ladies Home Journal (LHJ). His five points of advice as the most prominent Christian pastor in America? Accept yourself, love yourself, be true to yourself, forgive yourself, and believe in yourself. This self-focused, cross-denying teaching is the psychological gospel at its very core! Thanks to Warren's feel-good article, millions of Ladies Home Journal readers—most of them not born-again Christians—will remain dead in their sins, separated from the life of God, busy loving themselves more. What does the Bible have to say about his five points of advice?
See

As a church, we use the term self-esteem as if it were salvation itself, most likely because some of the biggest names in Christendom—James Dobson, Rick Warren, Robert Schuller—insist we need more of it to be happy. They say our problems in relationships, marriage, career, child-rearing, spiritual life and private life stem from low self-esteem. Let’s take a look at what God has to say to us about how we should see ourselves, in His timeless, eternal Word, the Bible:

Researchers say antidepressant ads are misleading, since chemical imbalances remain unproven |
The non-profit Public Library of Science (PLoS) has researched scores of SSRI antidepressant advertisements, including the famous Zoloft bouncing ball, and has found these ads mislead the public by claiming that a serotonin imbalance could be to blame for their depression, despite growing researcher skepticism of this theory. The authors correctly note that researchers don’t even know the normal amount of serotonin in the brain to begin with, much less how to correct a theoretical imbalance of serotonin. Read the article here.

In the full essay entitled "Serotonin and Depression: A Disconnect between the Advertisements and the Scientific Literature," the PLoS authors explain in detail why the chemical imbalance theory has not been accepted by researchers. They cite many studies that cast doubt on the theory, but could not find a single study proving the theory. They conclude, "Far from being a radical line of thought, doubts about the serotonin hypothesis are well acknowledged by many researchers." Read the full essay here.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and drug companies insist that our mental disorders are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Since the theory’s inception in the 1960s, much evidence has been gathered against it, and none for it. But the theory lives on nonetheless, and multitudes have put their faith in psychiatry’s claims. Has the pharma-psych complex created a new religion to replace the traditional treatments of the soul? This brief article puts psychiatry where it should be: in the realm of religion.

"As the drug companies are running out of real diseases to boost their pharmaceutical sales, they're increasingly inventing new, fictitious diseases in order to scare people into thinking they have some sort of disorder or dysfunction." You may be one of the millions of Americans with one or more of these tragic diseases: Refrigerator Door Disease, Obsessive Wardrobe Change Disorder (OWCD), and Repetitive Remote Disorder. In this month’s letters, we have a lively exchange with a Christian man and his daughter, who believe they have ADHD and must take a drug for it, and that anyone who questions this must be crazy. See it here.
