Reader Letter, 11/18/05

Good morning!

I just got done reading the article about the hyperactive boy [see http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0511_Q&A.htm] and rejoiced that the first thing you mentioned as a possible solution was diet.  I, too, had a son with this problem back in the 80's and God led me to the solution that worked for us.

When he was a 4-5 year old I began to notice behaviors that concerned me. The Lord turned on the light one day after giving my kids Kool Aid. We were living in a log cabin at the time and about 20 minutes after having some red Kool Aid my son literally started climbing the walls!  I realized something was in that stuff that my son reacted to physically.

A few days later I was at church and was telling someone about what happened and someone else overheard our conversation and said she had a book she wanted me to read. I don't remember the title but it was by Dr. Feingold.  The premise of the book was to get your kids off all artificial additives. He said that these kids didn't want to be bad, they just couldn't find the self control they needed because of their diet. This was more acceptable to me than drugs so I began the journey.

At first it was difficult but I soon realized that you only had to read a label once to find out if something was edible or not. I was a stay-at-home mom at the time so I spent much time making all meals from scratch and even made my own mayonnaise and mustard once!  The benefits were immediate . . I had my child back . . and the entire family became more peaceful!

My son, like the boy in the article, was also very bright.  In first grade he breezed through all his work. At school he did his best to stay away from "artificials" because he realized that they affected his behavior.  That was easy because if he acted up I would ask him what he had eaten and would make the connection between the food and his behavior. I found it was true that he really didn't want to be bad. He wanted to be accepted and loved just like any child. I homeschooled him for part of that year and it was a joy but and the next year I noticed that he was having trouble sitting still and concentrating.  Over the summer I had "relaxed" all of our diets. I mentioned this to a friend and she suggested it might be the "artificials". Now why this hadn't occurred to me I have no idea but I went back to the diet and the changes, once again, were immediate.

He eventually did grow out of this but still likes to eat well. All my kids do! The amazing thing to me was the women who gave me the book never did make any changes for her family and her son continues to be an irritation to people, even as an adult.  Over the years I find few people willing to make the sacrifice to change their diets over the convenience of prepared foods but I'm a believer that it works. I will always try and encourage anyone with a hyperactive child to try this before using any drugs but most people think taking a pill is an easier way out . .  I even gave one of your tapes on the subject to a friend who is a public school teacher and she wouldn't accept it because it's more important to her to have the children drugged and pliable in class. I can understand her frustration because most parents aren't willing to make the sacrifice.

Thanks so much for all you do to get the word out and hopefully save many children from the evils of these drugs! May God richly bless your work!
