8 Things You Need to Know...

Dear Reader,

Dr. Opal Reddin, Assemblies of God ordained minister, Central Bible College professor and author, went to be with the Lord in glory on November 27, 2005. Many of our readers knew Dr. Reddin personally as their teacher and friend. We remember her for her support and prayers for our book and ministry, and for her love of the Bible. She spent much of her time opposing the modern ecumenical movement and the dangers of psychology and mysticism. Regarding the latter, she stated in a recent email to us: “I am working on a paper to try to open the eyes of some of the leading ministers in my denomination (Assemblies of God) to the errors and dangers of mysticism. They never would have fallen for it, had they not been brainwashed by psychology. I am showing that psychology and psychiatry are the links to mysticism…”

Opal suffered from cancer for four years, but was still active in ministry all the way up to her death. About one month before her death, she wrote an appeal and warning to the church (see http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0602_Reddinlastwords.htm). Her words are reminiscent of the Apostle Paul’s last words to Timothy:

“I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

“For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:1-8

Dr. Reddin will be missed by many. You can read her obituary at
http://cityguide.ozarksgateway.com/fe/Obituaries/Profile.asp?businessid=72357.

While a true disease caused her death, others are dying from drugs taken for imaginary diseases promoted by drug companies and doctors. In this month’s issue, we review the FDA’s latest warnings regarding the safety of ADHD drugs for children and adults, and the side effects of antidepressants for pregnant mothers. Their warnings cannot come at a better time, as violent and suicidal acts by otherwise normal people on psych meds continue to make the headlines. Also, don’t miss this month’s Q&A on how to counsel self-abusers. We hope you enjoy the issue.

Yours in Christ,

Lisa and Ryan Bazler

FDA Recommends “Sudden Death” Warning Label For All ADHD Drugs

Just one month after the FDA recommended further study on the link between ADHD drugs and sudden deaths, heart attacks and strokes, the FDA’s Advisory Committee has recommended label warnings for all ADHD drugs (Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Dexedrine, Cylert, etc.), warning of high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke and sudden death in children and adults taking these drugs. The risk is greater with adults since adults more frequently exhibit heart problems. Get the full story here. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11242216/

ADHD Drugs – Cash Cow for Pharma

What used to be shunned as an illegal street drug is now a legal, multi-billion dollar revenue stream for ADHD drug companies. Investigative Journalist Evelyn Pringle explains why the FDA’s strongest ADHD drug warnings to date might just slow down production of one of Pharma’s biggest cash cows and the calves it feeds. Antidepressants are Hazardous to Your Baby’s Health, Studies Show

In December 2005, the FDA ordered a warning label on the antidepressant Paxil, warning of the potential for heart defects in newborns of mothers taking antidepressants during their first trimester of pregnancy.

This month, the FDA’s Advisory Committee recommended label warnings for all antidepressants, warning of lung disease in newborns of mothers taking antidepressants. Their recommendations followed a study showing infant lung disease is 6 times more likely when the mother is taking an antidepressant during the last half of her pregnancy: 1 in 100 babies will contract a lung disease called “persistent pulmonary hypertension,” 10-20 percent of those will die, and others will suffer from brain damage and hearing loss.

A related Israeli study recently showed that one-third of babies born to antidepressant-consuming women suffered withdrawal symptoms—including tremors, seizures, muscle tensing, gastrointestinal problems, and sleep disturbances—during the first 48 hours after delivery.

Preliminary data from a Washington State University Spokane study show high levels of sperm DNA damage in men taking antidepressants, “which decreased by approximately one half once they were no longer on the medication.” Sperm DNA damage can cause infertility, miscarriages, and even childhood diseases, according to the article.

As Antidepressant Prescriptions Rise, So Do Violence and Suicide

In late 2004 and 2005, the FDA required labels on all SSRI antidepressants warning of increased violent and suicidal behavior in children and adults (see http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/advisory/SSRI200507.htm and http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/2004/NEW01124.html). Nonetheless, as the church and the world continue to push antidepressants as the solution, the list of violent and suicidal acts by people on antidepressants continues to grow...

In January 2006, Charlotte bank executive David Crespi stabbed his 5-year-old twin girls, Tessara and Samantha, to death in their upscale home, and threatened to kill himself. Crespi had switched to a new antidepressant just days before the murders. The FDA violent behavior warning recommended careful observation especially at the start of treatment and when dosages change, which was the case here

Also in January 2006, former Utah police officer Arthur Henderson chased a car carrying his former wife and her boyfriend and fired gunshots through his windshield before crashing into their parent’s home. Henderson continued shooting at the boyfriend until police arrived and Henderson started firing at them. He was wounded and finally arrested. Henderson admitted to taking antidepressants, but said that “his doctor had recently refused to give him more of the drug.”

50-year-old Michael Austin stabbed his 42-year-old wife to death in their Stockton, California home on December 30, 2004. He was on the antidepressant Prozac.

Sam Donaldson's ranch manager's 14-year-old son was on the antidepressant Zoloft when he shot and killed his parents and sister on July 5th, 2004. He started taking Zoloft on April 20th.

Illinois teenager Sarah Lowery suffered hallucinations and unsuccessfully hanged herself after three months on Prozac, causing severe brain injury and disability. According to the article, 19-year-old Lowery now “functions at the level of a 6- to 9-month-old, relies on a feeding tube and is confined to a wheelchair after the 2003 suicide attempt.”
