Whatever Happened to Jesus?

A poem by Leroy Habecker, September 2005

Whatever happened to Jesus,

our great God and Savior of old,

who died for our sins

and rose from the dead

as the ancient prophets foretold?

Whatever happened to Jesus,

who promised to meet every need?

We now look to ourselves

or the worldly wise

and the god that we serve is our greed.

Whatever happened to Jesus,

whose love is more precious than gold?

He sent us His Spirit

to give us new life

and into His image mold.

Whatever happened to Jesus,

and the people who once praised His name?

We're now loving ourselves

and when our life isn't right

we're looking for others to blame.

Whatever happened to Jesus?

He offers His love to us still.

His arms are outstretched

to embrace every heart

who humbly submits to His will.
