| Q&AQuestion: I do have a couple questions that I would love addressed, just so that I have clarity on these issues. In the movie, “A Beautiful Mind”, how would these issues that Russell Crowe’s character displayed have been handled biblically? I am very curious about how to address people with delusions and hallucinations with the Word of God. I know that Truth would be applied since they are believing lies ..but how would this have been addressed if this gentleman saw a biblical counselor instead of seeking the treatment he did? Also, the King James Bible refers to a lunatic and defines it as being “moon struck” (as the definition rendered it). What is the meaning of a lunatic, and what does that describe? Epilepsy or what some people would call “mental illness?” How is this type of manifestation addressed biblically? Thank you so much!! Your ministry is appreciated! Answer: You have some really good questions. To make simple a seemingly complex issue, Russell Crowe's character simply needed to be saved and his mind cleansed and renewed by the washing of the Holy Spirit. The enemy comes to rob, kill and destroy, and that is exactly what he did to this character, with the help of psychiatry and their ECTs and drugs to worsen the situation. The flesh and the devil work in tandem to create fear/paranoia in someone's life, and fear is a major component of schizophrenia. Contrast this with God's Holy Spirit, who gives us a sound mind: 2Ti 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. We address the question, “How do you propose treating people who have lost touch with reality, if you do not do it with medication?” in a prior newsletter here: http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0502_Q&A.htm According to Vine’s Dictionary of Old and New Testament words, the English word “lunatic” comes from the Greek word seleniazo, which literally means “to be moon struck.” The Revised Version of the Bible translates the word as “epileptic” and the King James translates it “lunatick.” Vine’s states: “Epilepsy was supposed to be influenced by the moon.” To get an understanding of the biblical uses of the words “lunatic” and “madness,” here are some Scriptures taken from Strong's topical index: LUNATIC - an insane person
MADNESS - emotional or mental derangement A. Kinds of:
B. Causes of:
C. Manifestations of:
The Bible supports the idea that madness, or lunacy, can be caused either by disobedience to God and His Word, or by God's direct judgment—as in the case of King Nebuchadnezzar, who was humbled by God to the point of crawling on all fours and eating grass like a wild ox. The Bible also makes it clear that Jesus Christ can heal a lunatic or madman, as he did with the multitudes in Matthew 4:24. The Bible makes no mention of Christ referring lunatics to a psychiatrist for a drug prescription—His touch was enough to fully restore their minds. We hope this helps!
