8 Things You Need to Know...

Dear reader,

Hello again! Have you ever wondered how the Bible refers to "mental illness?" Matthew 4:23-24 describes Jesus' healing ministry:

"And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them." Matt. 4:23-24

Jesus healed sickness and disease, cast out demons, and even made mentally ill people (lunaticks) well again. The same Jesus who healed the mentally ill then, can heal the mentally ill now, through faith in Him!

This month's Q&A reviews the biblical uses of the words "lunatic" and "madness." We also answer the question, "How would you biblically handle Russell Crowe's character in A Beautiful Mind?"

In the news, more FDA conflicts of interests, drug company pill-pushing, and drug-induced violence fill the headlines. Finally, don't miss this month's informative article on the thyroid's link to depression and low energy.

In Christ the healer,

Lisa and Ryan Bazler

FDA conflicts of interest: protect the public or pharma?

Does FDA approval mean a psychiatric drug is safe and effective? Not when drug companies run the show. Drug trials are frequently funded, conducted and policed by drug companies or companies controlled or funded by drug companies. Trial results are frequently altered or withheld in order to provide the FDA with approval-safe data, or simply ignored by the FDA (Prozac and Seroxat cases in point). Why has the FDA ignored the facts? Because, as these articles describe, many advisory board members have financial ties to drug companies, including FDA head Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach and second-in-command Dr. Scott Gottlieb. In addition, 53% of FDA program funding comes from drug companies the FDA is supposed to regulate! Learn more about the broken and corrupt system we call the FDA here:

Drug companies expanding their markets to healthy people under the banner of "Pre-Disease"

Pre-diabetes. Pre-hypertension. Pre-osteoperosis. These are just three of the new category of "pre-diseases" that drug companies, doctors and the FDA are now peddling, capturing more patients by lowering the bar to include those potentially at risk. "Not content with selling $317 billion worth of drugs annually, the pharmacy companies have come up with a way to double those sales by selling drugs to healthy people. Millions of Americans who were pronounced healthy at their last check-up will now be told they fall into this “nearly-sick” classification. Most will be told they need a drug and many will comply because, after all, it’s their doctor saying this." Here is the full article.

Former Baseball Pitcher Jeff Reardon robs jewelry store while on psych drug cocktail

Former Major League Baseball relief pitcher Jeff Reardon, who made more than $11.5 million over his successful career, was arrested for holding up a jewelry store in West Palm Beach, Florida while on multiple antidepressants and mood stabilizers. His lawyer told reporters, "The medications caused him to be delirious and to hallucinate." Reardon couldn't believe it himself: "I don't think I've ever had a speeding ticket before, for crying out loud." Read the full story.

Three murders, one thing in common: Effexor

When the nation learned that Andrea Yates drowned her five kids in the bathtub of her Houston, Texas home back in 2001, many were asking why? Later it was discovered that weeks before the murders, her daily dose of Effexor was increased to twice the recommended maximum dose. Effexor carries a black box warning for suicidal ideation, and last year the FDA added a warning for potential "homicidal ideation." SSRI antidepressants like Effexor are making otherwise normal people cold-blooded killers:

Birmingham psychiatrist ousted for curing patients

"Birmingham Psychiatrist Dr. Hiebold Moranis was recently stripped of his credentials and permanently banned from Psychiatric practice because of his record of curing patients rather than 'treating' their symptoms. His actions were deemed contrary to modern psychiatric practice by the licensing board and by the Psychiatric Profit Society." Read more about Dr. Moranis' practice in this humorous spoof.

An underactive thyroid can cause depression, says UK doctor

An estimated 1 in 50 women and 1 in 1,000 men suffer from hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, which can cause depression, excessive tiredness, weight gain, constipation, aches and pains, feeling cold, dry skin, memory loss, and reduced libido. The woman in this article suffered for years and was referred to a psychiatrist for an antidepressant, when in reality all she needed was "a relatively simple regime of supplements and [thyroid] medication," which helped her improve in just three weeks. Her doctor states, "The sad truth for sufferers is that, with symptoms so general, they are usually sent away from their GP and told they're suffering from stress or depression... They're put on Prozac that does nothing to help the true cause."

Read this woman's amazing story here.

Letters

This reader shares her tragic story of her husband's experiences with Effexor and other psychiatric drugs, which she firmly believes caused him to drown their 13-month-old son to death in the bathtub on May 23, 2005 (see news coverage here: http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050525/NEWS03/505250373). She shares with us her thoughts of Wyeth Lab--the manufacturer of Effexor--and her husband's improving condition now that he is off all psychiatric drugs.
