Reader Letter 11/20/06 I know of several families [not just one person in the family but multiple members of] that are on antidepressants. Several of them aren't in any pastoral counseling or other counseling either. They have fallen for the deception that a little pill is all they need. I even preached a sermon some months back on the prodigal son and shared how he came back to the father and talked about repentance and how it involves dealing with 'those' issues that seem to keep us prisoner and keep us away from being close to the father. I shared how God has a plan to restore us and our relationship with Him. Then I shared how in my experience I have met many professing Christians who seem to have more faith in a little pill than they do in a great big God. I received an email the next day from a lady who was a bit put off and told me I had no authority to stand in the pulpit and speak on depression or antidepressants. I responded to her email and shared how I could see that this was a sensitive issue with her and that I too was one time in a place where I was at the end of my rope and just wanted to die. And I told her what I did...I fell on my face and cried out to God to forgive me and rescue me. And He did. It wasn't over night but he [not psychology] gave me what I needed the most...hope. I had gotten involved in psychology and psychoanalysis and was studying in college to become a counselor and mid-way through God brought me out of that and eventually led me into the ministry. Well, the lady and her family left the church and have not been back since. There are other things I can share with you but the one thing I really wanted to share with you and Lisa is thanks for writing this book. We, as the church, need to hear it. I have a future sermon in the back of my mind that I want to entitle 'Chemically-imbalanced Christianity'. I hear that term so often as if chemical imbalance was an actual disorder or disease... Thanks again for taking a bold stand. I pray more churches and people join with you both and get the truth out. Jesus likes truth. He said He is the Truth and He told us the Truth will set us free. If only more people would listen to the Truth...then we wouldn't have this psychological problem. --Pastor, Sterling, VA
