| Q&A - "Didn't God give us the wisdom of psychiatric drugs?"Question:
There are many
scriptures in the Bible of how Christ told us about encouraged the weak. The
brain is a major organ and as alzeimers has proven to all of us ...it is the
Dopamine cells that litterally die off and that is why they develop
forgetfulness and delusional speach and do on....GOD has provided scientists
the medications to at least help slow down the disease.
I am a born
again Christian since 8 years old and studied and suffered much. I also have
had many opportnities to bring people to Christ and though i believe that
medication is not the whole answer......We should be very grateful for the
wisdom he has bestowed on us.
I am however
very against anti-phychotic drugs and studying them and the research from
many patients they merely slow your brain into such vegetable. Well ....just
like phnumonia and many maternal deaths when we did not know about new
medications,,,,God showed them long ago that the cure was here on earth.
From the earth and many medications are from herbs.
When you have
been shot or stabbed and you mentually feel like your going crazy and wish
for death....God again gave mankind the wisdom of morphine and sedatives and
well you get my drift.
We also should
never be so quick to judge. I know many Phychiatrists that are christians
and they are not all what it seems.
Answer:
We agree with you that God
has given us the gift of doctors to treat the body, and even painkilling
medication (for wounds, childbirth, etc.).
What many people don't
understand is that psychiatry is not a true medical science. Its
foundation, the DSM, is basically a list of labels that classify
thoughts and behaviors. Psychiatry treats the soul, which is God's
territory, and attempts to medicalize morality and behavior--subjects
addressed fully in the Bible. It becomes a false gospel that undermines
the sufficiency of Christ and His Word (2 Peter 1:3).
In psychiatry and
psychology, no medical testing is done to prove to the doctor and
patient that a mental disorder exists--just subjective interviews, tests
and questionairres. The medical profession would consider prescribing a
drug without an objective test showing an abnormality as unethical, but
psychiatry gets away with it.
The assumption is made that
a patient has a chemical imbalance in their brain that determines their
behavior, but this has never been conclusively proven, even after over
50 years of research and blind belief:
Researchers say antidepressant ads
are misleading, since chemical imbalances remain unproven:
The non-profit Public Library of Science (PLoS) has researched
scores of SSRI antidepressant advertisements, including the famous
Zoloft bouncing ball, and has found these ads mislead the public by
claiming that a serotonin imbalance could be to blame for their
depression, despite growing researcher skepticism of this theory. The
authors correctly note that researchers don’t even know the normal
amount of serotonin in the brain to begin with, much less how to correct
a theoretical imbalance of serotonin. In the full essay entitled
"Serotonin and Depression: A Disconnect between the Advertisements and
the Scientific Literature," the PLoS authors explain in detail why the
chemical imbal ance theory has not been accepted by researchers. They
cite many studies that cast doubt on the theory, but could not find a
single study proving the theory. They conclude, "Far from being a
radical line of thought, doubts about the serotonin hypothesis are well
acknowledged by many researchers." (Public Library of Science,
November 7, 2005)
Antipsychotics are in the
same realm--drugs with no proof of safety or effectiveness, to treat a
chemical imbalance believed, but not known, to exist. In fact,
the truth is out now that the blockbuster antipsychotics are very
harmful and life-threatening, and these facts have been hidden from
doctors and the public by greedy drug companies. Now they're getting
sued in the billions by state and federal governments and private
parties who have been harmed.
Last, we are not judging
people, but teachings and industries. We're sure there are plenty of
loving, well-intentioned psychiatrists, psychotherapists and
psychologists, but that's not the point. These people are pushing
solutions that are unscientific and unbiblical (our newsletters go into
more detail on this). Psychiatrists should either get true science, or
admit they are treating soul issues that really belong to pastors and
teachers, and God Himself.
Hope this helps clarify.
In Christ,
Ryan and Lisa Bazler
