Dear Friend,
Welcome to the May 2007 issue of the Psychology Debunked
newsletter. Each month we cover psych issues impacting
the church, and there is probably no greater psych issue
affecting the church today than Christians
taking psychiatric drugs for mental and behavioral
issues the world calls "diseases" and "disorders."
The most frequent objection we get regarding our
warnings to the church to avoid mind-altering drugs is,
"But it helped me." We respond by asking, "What does
help mean to you?" The person typically answers, "It
made me feel better," "I don't do the things I used to
before taking the drugs," "it leveled me out," or the
like.
The Bible, on the other hand, defines help differently.
"Help" means growing in the grace and knowledge of our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It means being sanctified
and holy, set apart for the Lord. It means obtaining
victory over the flesh, the world and Satan. It means
growing in greater intimacy in your personal
relationship with Christ.
Psychiatric drugs do none of these things. Instead, they
take your eyes off of Christ and your Savior becomes a
pill instead of a Person. You're not set free from sin,
you're delivered from your "disease."
If you think God gave us these pills as a gift, ask
yourself, Would God give us a pill so we could excuse
sinful behavior by calling it a "disorder" or "disease?"
Would God give us a pill that performs no better than
placebo and could cause you to kill yourself and others?
Would God give us a pill so we could turn away from Him
for mental help--help He has promised to give His
children in His Word?
"Seeing then that we have a great High Priest
who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of
God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have
a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our
weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we
are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come
boldly to the throne of grace, that we may
obtain mercy and
find grace to help in time of need."
Hebrews 4:14-16
God has sent us Jesus Christ not only to die for our
sin, but to be our continual helper in the heavens in
the here and now. God's grace is sufficient in all
matters of the soul, as His Word declares (2 Peter 1:3,
2 Cor. 12:9, Col. 2:9-10). May we reject any mental,
emotional or behavioral treatment that denies this
glorious truth.
Grace and peace,

Virginia Tech: Another
Shooting Involving Antidepressants
Last month's Virginia Tech shooting shocked the nation
as the worst shooting in American history when Cho Seung
Hui killed 32 classmates before killing himself. Within
two seconds of hearing about the massacre, we knew
antidepressants were involved. The news stories have
sinced confirmed it. We might say, "But Cho was a
disturbed individual. He had a lot of problems not
related to drugs." Exactly. These are the worst kinds of
people to medicate with mind-altering, chemical-imbalancing
drugs! We believe Cho was walking a thin line and the
drugs pushed him over the edge and plummetted him to his
doom.
This well-documented article citing historical data and
studies from ethical doctors convincingly links
antidepressant drugs with violent behavior. more

A Pharmaceutical Insiders
Speaks Out
Ryan had the priviledge of recently meeting Gwen Olsen,
a veteran 15-year pharmaceutical sales rep, at a recent
event. Olsen knows what drug companies really do,
shrouded by what their salespeople are told to say. Read
her take on the Cho shootings--the relationship between
Cho's race and his metabolism of the antidepressant he
took that day might surprise you.

Pharma Sales Rep's Drugs Hit Home
Gwen Olsen spent fifteen years as a
pharmaceutical sales rep working for such healthcare
giants as Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and
Abbott Laboratories. She enjoyed a successful,
fast-paced career, but like Lisa, God had a different
plan for her life.
Olsen's first major antidepressant
awakening came when her niece got into a car accident.
Her niece became addicted to the pain medication from
that accident, but when she tried to withdraw,
depression set in. Her doctor responded by giving her an
antidepressant, which turned out to be a death sentence.
Olsen states, "She burned herself alive. She said ...I'd
rather be dead than feel crazy like I do on those
drugs."
Olsen was also personally treated for
depression in 1992. She was prescribed Zoloft. "I became
manicpsychotic. About 25 percent of the population will
have a serious adverse reaction. I was educated about
these side effects and I had sold drugs that caused
these side effects." Olsen walked away from her 6 figure
career in 2000 when her bosses asked her to sell the
antidepressant Celexa. In clinical studies, this
medication had increased the risk of suicidal thinking
and behavior in children and adolescents who had other
psychiatric disorders. It wasn't until four years later
in 2004 that the FDA finally warned the public.
Gwen Olsen now exposes the drugs she once
pushed. You can read more about her new book

Why Do People React
Differently to the Same Psychiatric Drug Dosages?
Have you ever wondered why one person experiences minor
side effects with a psychiatric drug, and another goes
on a shooting rampage? The answer lies in how that
person metabolizes the drug, which is genetically coded.
This article by Cassandra Casey gives some insight into
an enzyme responsible for breaking down the drug in a
person's body: CYP 2D6. more

Letters
Last month we
discussed the damage that RMT (Recovered Memory Therapy)
can have on a family. Since then, we received a letter
from a reader whose wife took the kids and abandoned him
after her RMT therapist convinced her that he was
abusive, even though no abuse was present in the
marriage. After the separation, he met with the RMT
therapist to better understand what happened. He is
still shocked by what this therapist said.

"For a disease to exist there must be a
tangible, objective physical abnormality
that can be determined by a test such
as, but not limited to, blood or urine
test, X-Ray, brain scan or biopsy. All
reputable doctors would agree: No
physical abnormality, no disease. In
psychiatry, no test or brain scan exists
to prove that a 'mental disorder' is a
physical disease. Disingenuous
comparisons between physical and mental
illness and medicine are simply part of
psychiatry's orchestrated but fraudulent
public relations and marketing
campaign."
