Dear Friend,

Welcome to the June 2007 issue of the Psychology Debunked newsletter. The Bible is truly an amazing book of books, telling us where we came from, how to live the way God intends, and where we're going. It will always have the answers to the needs of the soul and spirit, including mental, emotional and behavioral issues of life.

We can use the Bible as a litmus test whenever any claim is made about the causes and cures to our mental problems. For example, we recently reviewed a very scholarly article about the possible genetic causes of bipolar disorder. We stopped ourselves midway through and asked, "What does the Bible have to say about unstable, self-seeking, reckless behavior? Does the Bible make any exceptions, either expressly or implicitly, for people behaving this way because they inherited that behavior from their parents?"

Suddenly an issue that could get bogged down very easily in scientific rhetoric became crystal clear by simply remembering what God's Word teaches. We cannot blame a fleshly or sinful behavior on our genetics or chemicals, because this would completely nullify the teaching of God's Word on sin, repentance, and sanctification (behaviors caused by true medical problems excepted). But sin, repentance, and sanctification are not popular words today, and to say that bipolar, depression, ADHD or any other behavioral label could be manifestation of sin and the flesh is to ask for trouble.

We believe that emotions run high on this subject because many are seduced by a demonically inspired "different gospel" of pseudoscientific disorders, drugs and feeling better.

Gal 1:6
I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel,
Gal 1:7
which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
Gal 1:8
But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:9
As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:10
For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

Now is the time for us to uphold and defend the true gospel of grace--even if it offends--for we aim to please God and not men.

In this month's letters section, we hear from vocal readers who have turned away to a different gospel that is really no gospel at all, to their own spiritual detriment.

In the news, Drs. Breggin and Tracy give us their take on the Cho shootings, and the FDA continues to hear horror stories from SSRI antidepressant victims while the drugs still sell billions.

FDA orders suicide/homicide warnings for 18-24 yr-olds on SSRI antidepressants

As the killings and suicides continue at dozens per day, the drug-company-funded FDA has quietly asked SSRI drug manufacturers to extend their black box suicide/homicide warning label to apply to 18-24 year olds in addition to children and teens, even though older populations also show increased risk. This comes almost 6 months after the FDA Advisory Board recommendation and 2 years after the first FDA black box order for children and teens. By the time the FDA finally applies the warning to all age groups, patents will have run out and those drugs will have been shelved for the newest wonder drugs, available for all ages.

Dr. Breggin: Cho needed jail, not treatment

In his response to the Cho shootings at Virginia Tech, psychiatrist Dr. Peter Breggin, author of Your Drug May Be Your Problem, makes the case that assaultive behavior requires intervention by police, not mental health. Also an investigator in the Columbine massacre, he states, "The violence unleashed on the Virginia Tech campus should not lead to calls for more mental health screening, more mental health interventions, or more drugs. Instead, the violent rampage should confirm that psychiatric interventions don't prevent violence and instead they can cause it." more »

Dr. Tracy: "I want the drug companies' sins shouted from the rooftops"

For almost 20 years, Dr. Ann Blake Tracy (www.drugawareness.org) has warned the public about the dangers of psychiatric drugs--especially SSRI antidepressants. Reeling from Virginia Tech, she shares her heart in a passionate cry for the madness to stop and for voices of truth to be heard. more »

Widower condemns FDA for protecting drug companies, not consumers

Allan Routier lost his wife to a Wellbutrin-induced suicide after only six days on the drug given to her for stomach pain, which turned out to be a gall bladder problem. In December 2006, Allan challenged the FDA face-to-face. This transcript is his convicting indictment of the FDA and their criminal sins of omission. For his wife's sake, forward his words to everyone you know.

Schizophrenia better treated without drugs

Did Cho need antipsychotic drugs for his schizophrenia? This follow-up study by doctors at the Univ. of Illinois, Chicago, Dept. of Psychiatry published in the May 2007 Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases compared recovery outcomes and general functioning of groups of schizophrenics treated with and without powerful antipsychotic drugs. 40% of the non-drugged population showed improvement, versus just 5% of the drugged population. This study confirms our belief in how to best treat schizophrenia: love, support, and prayer, without drugs--the second of the greatest commandments: Love your neighbor as yourself. Lo and behold, the treatment was there in the Bible the whole time! more »

The Psychology Debunked Fan Club

We frequently get fiery questions, accusations and other fan mail from people who insist we must be false prophets and murderers and are from the devil himself when we warn people about taking psychiatric drugs. While these letters might seem discouraging at first glance, they serve as confirmations to us that this is a very real spiritual battle over the souls of Christians seduced by the godless pseudosciences of psychology and psychiatry and their medicalizing of morality and behavior. Here is a sampling of some memorable letters, along with our responses. We hope these letters encourage you to fight the good fight with us, in an attitude of love, boldness and prayer.

Letters

We also get blessed with letters from readers and supporters of our ministry--people who love God and His Word, and who love people enough to tell them the truth that will set them free. These readers have encouraging stories to share.

Notable Quotes

"The answer to vengeful, violent people is not more mental health screening or more potent mental health interventions. Reliance on the whole range of this system from counseling to involuntary treatment failed. There is not a shred of scientific evidence that locking people up against their will or otherwise "treating" them reduces violence."

Dr. Peter Breggin, Psychiatrist

"These twisted [FDA] mercenaries have been hiding suicides and homicides for years. The FDA's own head of drug safety, Dr. David Graham says it seems the FDA has declared war on the American people, and has now become the number one threat to their health and safety. Black boxes only cover financial liability, an attempt at preemption. How do you put a price tag on someone's life?"

 Allan Routier, Wellbutrin widower
