Q&A - "Does bipolar disorder exist or is it just another way the world excuses sin?"

Question:

Can you reply with a brief statement on your position on bipolar disorder? Does it exist or just another way the world excuses sin? I am very open on the subject but lean towards doubting its for real. Being a Christian, I seek the Lords wisdom on the subject.

Answer:

Here are some links on bipolar and the meds that treat it, from prior Psychology Debunked newsletters.

http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0607_Q&A.htm  (bipolar)
http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0607_letters.htm  (bipolar)
http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0510_letters.htm  (for an encouraging letter from another reader diagnosed with bipolar)
http://www.psychologydebunked.com/email0608_home.htm  (lists potential medical reasons for bipolar disorder and other mental disorders)

One thing these links don't mention is that bipolar-like symptoms may be a result of the side effects of stimulant (ADHD) drugs and antidepressants (or could also be withdrawal symptoms if discontinuing them). You can learn about the side effects and withdrawal symptoms of many common psychiatric drugs here:

The book Your Drug May Be Your Problem by psychiatrist Dr. Peter Breggin (get at Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Your-Drug-May-Problem-Psychiatric/dp/0738203483/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/002-7973269-5107233?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177384313&sr=8-3 )

Physician's Desk Reference (free info available at http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/index.html ).

See the first link of this page on our site for many psychiatric drug withdrawal sites, containing info written by medical doctors: http://www.psychologydebunked.com/news.htm#links

Hope this helps!

Hello again and thank you for taking this stand, I
agree with you. I’m constantly hearing about this new
"fad" called bipolar, from everyone and everywhere. I
was very confused but always felt it contradicted the
Word of God and His promises. I was once on meds for
depression, but I soon felt that taking meds would
eliminate the Lord's help and instead put my
dependence on worldly sources. I took myself off of
them but soon experienced even worse symptoms which
took months to get over!

About bipolar, I can never find any scientific and/or
medical proof to this "disease," and when people talk
about it they all explain it the same way (like its a
cult), plus two of my own family members claim this
problem and they are on full "disability" reaping all
the benefits that we the taxpayers must cover.

I have the conviction that this worldly diagnosis,
among many others, like you say, eliminates any
accountability to the real problem of sin. Anyway,
thanks for letting me know I am not alone and I will
continue to seek the Lord for the truth and for my
help.
