Dear Friend,

Welcome to the January issue of the Psychology Debunked newsletter! As we start off the new year, we thought it appropriate to share our ministry's mission statement with you:

The mission of Psychology Debunked is to inform mental sufferers and those from whom they seek help of the physical, mental and spiritual dangers of mental health disorders and treatments, and to encourage them to pursue a drug-free, psychology-free, Christ-centered life.

Our ministry verse sums up our core belief in the sufficiency of Christ and His Word for Christian living:

2Pe 1:3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

We thank you for your support and prayers for us, and we pray that God would raise up others to be voices of truth in this area.

We're also pleased to announce the arrival of our fourth child, Sarah Rose Bazler!

Sarah Rose

In this issue, doctors' prescribing practices influenced by drug companies, bipolar myths and cures, a Q&A on Gardasil--the new HPV vaccine for young girls--and a reader-recommended program that has successfully helped 30,000 people withdraw from psychiatric drugs.

Yours in Christ,

Lisa and Ryan Bazler

Is Your Doctor a Dealer for the Drug Companies?

You want your doctor to give you the most objective, neutral, accurate and complete information possible about your condition and its treatment. But when drugs are involved, will your doctor's advice come from truth, or drug company influence? A NY Times editorial and two personal stories of former drug reps describe how cozy, lucrative relationships between doctors and drug reps can easily sway doctors to recommend and prescribe drugs. Psychiatrist and former drug rep Dr. Daniel Carlat's story is a must-read as he describes the development of his relationship with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

Should You Medicate Your Bipolar Child's Mind?

Child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth J. Roberts asks this question in light of the increasing trend to label normal or rebellious childhood behavior as a mental disorder leading to dangerous drug treatment. She argues that doctors are medicating far too many kids who just need a better upbringing. more »

Pharmakeia Part 3

The Bible states in Revelation 18:23 that in the last days, all nations would be deceived by sorceries (pharmakeia). There are many ways one could characterize the final days of the earth, but here God chose to characterize it as worldwide, pervasive drug use that would deceive people into looking to mind-altering, soul-numbing experiences for hope and comfort. more »

Notable Quotes

"The symptoms, which are regarded as evidence of bipolar disorder, usually are what most people recognize as ordinary belligerence. Children who have anger outbursts, who refuse to go to bed, who are moody and self-centered under the current standard of care in child psychiatry are being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. To most rational human beings, these behaviors describe an ill-mannered, immature and poorly disciplined child. Nonetheless, the temper tantrums of belligerent children are increasingly being characterized by doctors as the mood swings of bipolar disorder.

"Instead of grooming, feeding and educating the next generation of Americans to be the fittest, brightest, most competent contributors on the planet, we have indulged, placated and spoiled our children into dysfunctional misfits. We are teaching our children to use a psychiatric diagnosis to excuse their antisocial behaviors. This will inevitably lead to a greater reliance on psychiatric medications, which unfortunately do not endow an individual with improved self-control or maturity."

Dr. Elizabeth J. Roberts, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
