Reader Letters June 1, 2008
========================================================= Our Reply:
Thank you for your email and for your
patience in receiving a reply. We appreciate you sharing with us your story,
which we think is symptomatic of what occurs in most churches these days:
pastoral counselors who use hollow, ineffective secular counseling methods
rather than pointing people to the Scriptures for healing and solutions. In
your case the results were tragic, but thank God you turned away from the
labels and excuses and took responsibility for your life.
We have written in the past about those who
seem to have lost touch with reality and are hearing voices, here:

We comment on schizophrenia and
cases like "Casey" here:

I (Lisa) have worked closely
with schizophrenics in psychiatric wards, and most of them do seem to have
lost touch with reality. But I believe most are either this way because of
the brain damaging drugs themselves, or because they are knowingly escaping
reality (or a jail sentence) as described in the "Casey" case above, or they
fall into one of the categories covered in the 0609 Q&A link above,
including demon possession.
The behaviors you describe
seeing matches exactly with what I saw working in psychiatric wards.
Patients told me about hearing voices from the CIA and FBI through fillings
in their teeth, and they frequently would bang their heads against the wall.
I had one patient who literally ran at full speed into walls to stop the
constant flashbacks of the traumatic abuse he experienced as a child. We
have common experiences because these behavioral influences originate from
the same source: the demonic realm. The Lord Jesus Christ has power over
these confusing, despairing influences in the person whose heart has
believed in Him and received His love, forgiveness and healing. Many of our
readers can testify of this firsthand.
I have also seen a few
homeless patients who are completely normal but just want, as we used to
say, "three hots and a cot" on the state's nickel. I saw the same patients
week in and week out, and some of them were normal and knew how to work the
system. Just say you want to kill yourself and you get a free bed for a
few nights. I even had one patient from UCSD during finals week who looked
and acted completely normal, but was labeled as schizophrenic because he
supposedly had a "psychotic break." Looking back, I believe he wanted a
way out of his stressful situation without looking irresponsible--mental
illness provided this safety net. With no science to back up disease labels
and justifications for drug prescriptions, and society's general pity for
the mentally ill, this kind of behavior is possible and commonplace.
Getting back to your situation,
we believe God has orchestrated these events in your life for a purpose. We
hope you can be a light to those with whom you work in the mental health
establishment by pointing them to the real and effective solutions found in
a relationship with God through Jesus Christ and obedience to His Word.
In Christ,
Lisa and Ryan Bazler
