Dear Friend,

Earlier this month, we covered "The Mothers Act," an industry-serving piece of legislation that already passed House vote, and will be voted on in the Senate by Mother's Day. This act will REQUIRE all pregnant and new mothers to undergo mental health screening for depression, nationwide.

The mom is given a highly subjective questionnaire about her moods and is labeled as depressed based on her answers. Since most new moms will trust the advice given by their doctors, these labels will almost ALWAYS lead to an antidepressant drug prescription, and antidepressants are known to cause SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS including suicide, homicide, and infant death.

Christian Delahunty knows firsthand what these antidepressants can do, and how doctors rarely tell the whole truth about the drugs they prescribe. We dedicate this special issue to Christian and her precious baby Indiana.

For Indiana,

Lisa Bazler, M.A.

Christian's Story

Christian's story begins back in 2001. Following the birth of her fourth child and the death of her mother, Christian was put on the antidepressant Effexor-her first time ever on an antidepressant. Fast forward to 2007: Christian asked her doctor if she needed to stop taking Effexor because she wanted another baby. Christian's doctor told her that there were no studies showing Effexor even gets to the baby during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and that it would be okay to stay on it. This was simply not true, as the FDA has already warned about taking this and other antidepressant drugs during pregnancy.

On July 26, 2008, Christian went into premature labor with Indiana.

When the attending doctor found out she was on Effexor, he immediately called the neonatal intensive care unit and told them to get ready for an "Effexor baby."

While psychiatric groups and pharmaceutical companies fight to pass "The Mother's Act," which would pave the way for millions more pregnant women and new mothers to take antidepressant drugs like Effexor, baby Indiana was just fighting to breathe.

Indiana pulled through it, though.

Her family welcomed her home and surrounded her with love. Little did they know their time with her would be cut short.

Indiana was continuously in and out of the hospital over the next several weeks. Christian thought she just had more problems than the average baby, because she was never told about FDA warnings that Effexor could cause complications in babies requiring prolonged hospitalizations and respiratory support.

When Indiana was found not breathing one day, her parents rushed her to the hospital. After 45 minutes of CPR, her heart was somehow beating, but it wasn't enough. Indiana's brain was too badly deteriorated.

Christian and her husband held their baby while on life support for five days...

...before having to let go.

Indiana died just six weeks after birth.

All they had to look forward to now was burying their beautiful baby girl.

Indiana's spirit lives on in eternity. May her death not be in vain.

What You Can Do

1) Pray for the Delahunty family, that God would draw them near to Him and comfort them, especially as Mother's Day approaches.

2) Petition our Father in heaven that this Act does not pass - for Indiana's sake, and the sake of all who come after her who are born to die at the hands of the mental police. Ask Him for direction on how He wants you to help.

5) Know and pass on these clear & simple facts about why the Mother's Act is wrong: http://tinyurl.com/StopMAReasons

6) Write, fax or call your member of Congress (we have--it just takes a few minutes). Remember, as elected officials, your Congress members are supposed to represent your views!

Notable Statistics

Many innocent babies before Indiana have suffered when their mothers took antidepressants. In fact, the FDA’s adverse drug reaction reports in the last four years alone state that antidepressants have caused:

  • 145 spontaneous abortions,
  • 150 premature babies,
  • 208 babies born with heart disease, and
  • 218 babies born with defects.

In December 2005, the FDA ordered a warning label on the antidepressant Paxil, warning of the potential for heart defects in newborns of mothers taking antidepressants during their first trimester of pregnancy. (See http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/advisory/paroxetine200512.htm.)

In February 2006, the FDA's Advisory Committee recommended label warnings for ALL SSRI antidepressants, warning of lung disease in newborns of mothers taking antidepressants. Their recommendations followed a study showing infant lung disease is 6 times more likely when the mother is taking an antidepressant during the last half of her pregnancy: 1 in 100 babies will contract a lung disease called "persistent pulmonary hypertension," 10-20 percent of those will die, and others will suffer from brain damage and hearing loss. (See http://www.psycport.com/stories/knightridder_2006_02_09_krtbn_0000-0017-GL-ANTIDEPRESS-20060209.xml.html.

A related Israeli study recently showed that one-third of babies born to antidepressant-consuming women suffered withdrawal symptoms—including tremors, seizures, muscle tensing, gastrointestinal problems, and sleep disturbances—during the first 48 hours after delivery. (See http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-02/jaaj-aud020206.php.)

With over 30 million people on antidepressant drugs in this country, surely hundreds of thousands are taking them during pregnancy, and more Indiana tragedies are no doubt occurring, and will continue to occur.
