Welcome to the June 2009 issue of the Psychology Debunked
newsletter!
Continuing our focus on ways we can improve our marriages, here is
Commandment #5 of our "Ten Commandments of a Blessed Marriage:"
5. Confront kindly.
When offended, approach your partner with kind words and a gentle tone,
and express what happened and why it offended you. Ask questions and
seek clarification. Your goal should be peaceful repentance and
restoration, not hostile judgment and condemnation, which shuts down
communication and escalates conflict.
Mat 18:15
Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his
fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast
gained thy brother.
Gal 6:1
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual,
restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest
thou also be tempted.
Luk 6:37
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be
condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
2Cr 7:9
Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to
repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might
receive damage by us in nothing.
2Cr 7:10
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of:
but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
God embodies these qualities of truthful confrontation and loving
restoration. His Word makes clear our fallen condition, and He died
sacrificially to restore the broken relationship between a holy God and
a sinful humanity. He has left us an example to follow in our marriages
and other earthly relationships.
We have some major headlines to report this month: a stronghold of the
depression industry and the homosexual agenda has been broken in
findings of no depression gene or gay gene after all; FDA approves more
harmful drugs for children for the sake of drug company profits; ADHD
drugs linked to sudden death; a psychiatrist who actually doesn't
prescribe drugs; more unjust mental illness pleas; humorous new DSM
disorders that you just might have; a new article series from Victor
Storkel comparing psychology with the Bible; and a Q&A on genetic
predisposition.
We hope you enjoy the issue!

Depression gene a psychological myth, says NIMH study
"One of the most celebrated findings in modern psychiatry — that a
single gene helps determine one’s risk of depression in response to a
divorce, a lost job or another serious reversal — has not held up to
scientific scrutiny, researchers reported Tuesday."

Gay gene debunked by APA
"The attempt to prove that homosexuality is determined biologically has
been dealt a knockout punch. An American Psychological Association
publication includes an admission that there's no homosexual "gene" --
meaning it's not likely that homosexuals are born that way." Just
like the Bible says, homosexuality is a moral issue, not a medical one.

FDA approves more antipsychotic poisons for children
Completely ignoring the largest DoJ settlement in U.S. history--$1.4B
against Eli Lilly for hiding lethal side effects of Zyprexa--the FDA
has again sided with drug companies over consumers and put profits ahead
of safety by recently approving the marketing of three more
antipsychotics to treat children and adolescents with schizophrenia and
bipolar. Zyprexa, Seroquel, and Geodon join Risperdal and Abilify as
five of the most toxic medications used to "treat" children for these
"diseases."
For the FDA, it doesn't matter that they know these antipsychotic
drugs cause weight gain, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hormonal
and sexual malfunction, hyperglycemia, cardiovascular and liver
abnormalities, and sudden death in adults. When half of the FDA's
budget is paid by the drug companies themselves, safety takes a back
seat to politics and power. After all, the benefits outweigh the risks
for this age group, and sacrificing of the few is worth treating of the
many, right?

FDA approves antidepressant Lexapro for children
"Just weeks after prosecutors accused Forest Laboratories Inc. of
illegally marketing its antidepressants Celexa and Lexapro to children
and paying pediatricians kickbacks, U.S. health regulators Friday
approved Lexapro for depression in kids." Just another example of how
the FDA is in bed with the drug powers that be, now protecting them
in the face of recent litigation. Back in 2003, didn't the FDA warn of
increased suicidal and violent behavior in children taking these drugs?
How then did these same drugs become suddenly safe for children?

ADHD drugs linked to sudden death
"Some parents believe new study reinforces link between stimulants,
cardiac death" says this new ABC News report. "...those who died
suddenly were 7.4 times more likely than not to have been taking the
stimulant medications."

Psychiatrist abandons all psych drug treatments
"I no longer recommend psychiatric medications to anyone," says this
psychiatrist.

Canadian bus beheader gets psych ward instead of prison, and could then
be released
"A Canadian judge ruled Thursday that a man accused of beheading and
cannibalizing a fellow Greyhound bus passenger is not criminally
responsible due to mental illness. The decision means Chinese immigrant
Vince Li will be treated in a mental institution instead of going to
prison." If
stabbing multiple times, cutting up into pieces, and eating body parts
of a complete stranger on a bus is not a crime, WHAT IS?! Where is
right and wrong, where is justice, when mental illness can be used to
excuse anything--when sick crimes are renamed as diseases like
schizophrenia? We are living in the times of the judges (see Judges 19),
when everyone does what is right in his own eyes. God help us repent of
not righteously judging these wicked acts.

8 New Ways You Might Be Insane
How many more descriptions of human behavior can psychiatry add to their
mental disorder bible before everyone in America is officially declared
mentally ill and need of treatment? DSM authors aren't too far away from
that goal:
"Midnight snacker? Compulsive shopper? Bitter? The new edition of the
mental health bible may classify you as having a psychological
disorder."

The Bible and Psychology: What Does God Say About Solving Man's
Problems?
Victor Storkel, Founder and President, Virtue In Knowledge Publications,
has published some excellent articles comparing psychology and the
Bible, which we will share with you in the coming months. This month, we
start with an
Introduction and the article
"Is God’s Word Really Sufficient To Solve All of Man’s Problems?"
"Everyone seems to assume medications are specifically effective
for various mental illnesses which are at least in part chemical
or genetic in origin. I believe the science behind this is
seriously flawed. It is based on false assumptions that lead to
self-perpetuating mythology (and huge profits for drug
companies)...
"'Mental illnesses,' even severe ones,
are relational (I'd say spiritual as well). Psychiatry, by
focusing almost exclusively on biology, is making itself
increasingly irrelevant...
"Drugs never correct
imbalances. They never improve the brain. They 'work' by
impairing the brain and dampening feelings in various ways."
--Psychiatrist Douglas C. Smith
"My favorite definiton of a normal person is someone you do not
know very well..." --John Breeding, author of The
Wildest Colts Make the Best Horses
