"See and Ask for the Ancient Paths," Exhorts the Prophet Jeremiah

See and Ask for the Ancient Paths

by Dr. John Henderson

Thus says the LORD, "Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it.' And I set watchmen over you, saying, 'Listen to the sound of the trumpet!' but they said, 'We will not listen.'" (Jeremiah 6:16-17)

Here Jeremiah provides the real remedy for a sickened heart and broken life: the ancient paths. They are the paths comprising the gospel road - a road of repentance and faith, ordained and prepared by God since the beginning. When the agonies of sin come due, the ancient path is one of confession and change. When the sufferings of this life burden heavily, the ancient path is one of trust and perseverance in the Lord. It is a road of total devotion to Jesus Christ and total surrender to His kingdom. It is a narrow and difficult road, yet full of eternal health and hope. It is a long road by earthly time, yet brief in heavenly time, and God gives strength for the journey.

O how the signs of our day point and distract from the ancient paths! Be not misled by them, Christian counselors, for the ancient paths comprise the only good way - For the Lord Himself has forged the way and of it He has often spoken. Stand by, therefore, attentive and yielded to the word of God, and eager to offer the tested paths. Pray to bring the whole of your senses under submission to the will and ways of God.

See, dear friends, the path the Lord has illumined. See Jesus, "the way, the truth, and the life.1  All is darkness apart from Him. Even the smallest stones are troublesome in the shadows. Even simple terrain is treacherous at night. Ask, as students of the gospel, for the path the Lord has appointed to our good. Ask for Jesus, who gives generously from a well by which we drink and never thirst.2  Only Jesus awakens us to actual human needs. Only Jesus satisfies actual human needs.
