Dear Friend,

Welcome to the February 2010 issue of the Psychology Debunked newsletter!

Turning away from sin and self, and turning to God by faith, can change a life in an instant. No other therapy, or drug, or method, or program, or philosophy, or religion, or intellectual or scientific pursuit can do what God can do when He transforms the heart and soul of an individual.

All the guilt, the pain, the emptiness and loneliness, the fear, the power of the flesh, is removed in an instant, and replaced with forgiveness, healing, comfort, love, and holiness. No psychologist or psychiatrist can ever do what God can do! No man or man-made substance can make another man a new creature, with a new nature, new desires, new pursuits, and a new final destination - only the power of God can do that!

2Cr 5:17  Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

This month, a reader becomes a new creature in Christ, burying 15 years of bipolar baggage.

In the news, drug trial data from the drug companies themselves shows antidepressants are useless, despite their marketing to the contrary; childhood tantrums become a mental illness; mug shots of psychiatrists who have become infamous for their incestuous relationships with their drug suppliers; groundbreaking new vaccine study coming soon; and in this month's Q&A, a biblical view of sex.

New Creatures in Christ,

Lisa and Ryan Bazler

Actual drug trial data show antidepressants no better than sugar pills; benefits pushed anyway

Dr. Irving Kirsch states, "Depression is not a brain disease, and chemicals don't cure it. My awareness that the chemical cure of depression is a myth began in 1998..." (this is a must-read, brief article, but note we do not agree with all of his alternative treatment recommendations.)  more »

Antidepressant not working? Try antipsychotics instead, says Abilify maker

"American doctors wrote more than 164 million prescriptions for antidepressants in 2008, making it the third-most-prescribed of any class of drugs. Now Bristol-Myers Squibb is tapping into that vast market with an aggressive advertising campaign for its blockbuster antipsychotic medication, Abilify. Abilify was originally approved for treating schizophrenia and, soon after, bipolar disorder. But it hit the real jackpot in late 2007 when it won approval as an add-on treatment for people with major depression who haven't gotten adequate relief from taking an antidepressant alone." Abilify grossed $2.3 billion last year alone. Read about this new antipsychotic trend and its dangers here.

Seroquel lawsuits grow to 26,000 over diabetes link

A year ago, we told you about 9,000 cases filed against antipsychotic Seroquel maker Astra Zeneca for hiding a link to type 2 diabetes. That number has now grown to 26,000: "AstraZeneca PLC is facing as many as 26,000 lawsuits over its antipsychotic drug Seroquel as the drug maker prepares for its first jury trial over claims the medicine causes diabetes, according to court filings." more »

Child temper tantrums becoming a mental illness?

"Childhood temper tantrums, teenage irritability and binge eating may soon rate as psychiatric disorders in the US, according to proposed changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, the bible of the psychiatric profession." more »

Psychiatrists raking in the money from drug companies

This "Most Wanted" list of the most offensive psychiatrists on the take includes a Miami psychiatrist who writes an average of 153 drug prescriptions a day, every day, for six years. He is currently being investigated by the Feds for Medicare fraud. See all the mug shots here (courtesy Ken Kramer of psychsearch.net).

BBC: Fish oils beat mental illness

"Taking a daily fish oil capsule can stave off mental illness in those at highest risk, trial findings suggest."  more »

Q&A

This reader asks, "How do I deal with my husband who wants to have pornographic sex multiple times per day?"
See our response here.

Letters

Two letters this month - one from a new born again Christian who rejoices that confession and submission to God has done in an instant what 15 years of bipolar treatment never did...

"All these gave me the faith to pray to God to heal me and I prayed this on Dec 31, 2009. I confessed everything to God and gave my whole life to him. I feel totally relieved of my emotional distress I have had for 15 years which no medicine could cure. I am a new creation now - a new person in Christ - made whole by the blood of Christ. Praise God!! Halleluah!!"  full letter »

...and the other from a reader diagnosed bipolar and on multiple psychiatric drugs since 1992 who desperately wants to get free from the drugs, but cannot:

"i've been taking this garbage pills since 1992, and i desie so badly, to be off of these pills,..........i have been tricked, they say they're not addictive, but then why each time i try and go off them, i can't even stand up or think straight? my mind spins, my balance goes, it's horrible - they're answer is - oh, that's because your body needs it, well, i know the real answer is because i've been taking this crap for so long that now i am addicted to it when i never needed it in the first place."  full letter »

Notable Quotes

"All told, we analyzed 38 published clinical trials involving more than 3,000 depressed patients. What we found came as a big surprise. It turned out that 75 percent of the antidepressant effect was also produced by placebos - sugar pills with no active ingredients that are used to control the effects of hope and expectation in clinical trials. In other words, most of the improvement seen in patients given antidepressants was a placebo effect."

--Dr. Irving Kirsch

"There's more joy in fellowship with the Lord and other believers for 1 minute than all the years of this [psychiatric drug] garbage put together."

--Reader on psychiatric drugs since 1992
