"I am one who has endured every type of abuse from the time of my birth - sexual and emotional abuse by my adoptive father who was a leader for one of the largest Christian organizations across America. Due to this (only a reason - not excuse) I began at the age of 14 to marry abusive husbands and almost lost my life multiple times. "…what felt to be the hardest over the years was seeking healing - I was sent from group to group to counselor to psychologist to pastor to ... and it piled more and more burden onto my already desperate soul - it was as the blind leading the blind and the lame carrying the obese!… "He taught me by His word to take responsibility for my sin and helped me unwind what was my responsibility and what was others. He taught me to forgive those who had harmed me - and to lay it at the cross. He taught me to take responsibility for my sins and go to others and repent of my sins, and lay this at the cross. Because of my repentance, others in the churches continually told me over the past 10 years that I am too hard on myself, that my self-esteem was too low, that I needed to learn to love myself… But as you stated, Lisa, because they had been Christians longer, I felt I must have been wrong all of the time. "I even once witnessed a pastor inviting young women into the church from the community and only offering them psychology. Many of these young women were involved in the occult and I told him that they did not need psychology but they needed the truth of the cross of Jesus Christ - and that by his not offering this, he was inviting darkness into the church. He laughed at me and told me that I would be well one day. Not long after the woman who set up the communion told me that every time she would go behind the altar, a darkness would hit her and she could not do this anymore. "Well last Sunday, after church service, we went into the bookstore… I was pretty much resigned to the fact that there was no such book, as there are not many bold Christians out there ready to tackle such a controversial issue, and especially one that has so permeated the church… We had done all the looking and I was just standing there when I looked in front of me, and there on the shelf, only one copy left, was your book. The title jumped out at me, and I thought oh my gosh, is this the book? I looked in the table of contents and then could barely contain myself. God is so good!!! ALL the time! All that was before became a puzzle link to the truth. Amen! "I have always spoken out, about psychology, addictions and especially the medications issue. I'll tell you this, that people, and especially Christians, did not want to hear what I had to say. I was blown off as not being credible because I was not a college graduate, nor [in] the field. And they surely didn't want to hear what God had to say. "I know from experience if books like this that point the believer to Christ and the Word aren't put into new believer's hands, then they are very prone to read any book labeled 'Christian'. I've found that to be true in my own walk. Not really sure why I was acting a certain way and having well-meaning people point me in the direction of psychology-based Christian books (that emphasized my upbringing to be a lot of the problem) and Christian therapists (emphasizing the same problem), when the problem was sin, not my past, environment, how I was raised, etc. Thank you for helping us understand that a lot of the problems come from ourselves, and that pointing the finger at others doesn't make sin suddenly evaporate. The problem is our heart, but thank God for our Lord Jesus Christ, he died for just that reason!!
