| Reader Responses, 20047/31/04: "Thank you very much for the book I have read it and passed it on to a psych student at BIOLA [University]! I completely agree with you concerning psychology. "In the first few years of serving as a pastor I counseled people and always wondered about psychological counseling. I never fully agreed with it and felt like the odd man out… After 7 years in the pastorate my wife told me there was a guy on the radio that believed like I did. When I listened to him I was convinced that I was not "nuts" or "off base" about psychology. Now I knew for sure that psychology IS a "doctrine of demons" that Paul warned Timothy about in 1 Tim.4:1. The pastor I heard on the radio that day was Bob Hoekstra… "I personally do not believe in any drug for the mind, I do believe in medications for the body as Jesus Himself acknowledged physicians in Luke 5:31 when He said, "Physicians are for the sick". He did not say psychiatrists are for the mind! "Thank you very much, and may God richly and abundantly bless you both." –MM, Internet ------------------------------------------------------------ 7/20/04: "I look forward to reading on this subject from the 'been there, done that' side. I work amongst the 'therapists' in my capacity as Manager of a govt. funded youth crisis centre. I also see that as much as they try to foist their theories and practises. The results in the lives of young people from those efforts is not all that encouraging." –DH, Internet ------------------------------------------------------------ 7/14/04: "I haven’t read your book but I did find your website intriguing! My son was progressively misdiagnosed over the course of several years as ADD, Depressed, and then Bipolar. He went through MANY different pharmaceutical regimens and they only seem to make him more "dopey" instead of positively affecting the behavior. However, through God’s power and an Outdoor Therapy Program lasting almost 8 months, he was weaned off all medications and learned the skills and discipline he needed to be able to deal with his emotions! PRAISE GOD! He got out of OTP over a year ago and is in regular classes at school (instead of Special Ed), making good grades, has good friends, loves the Lord and is working a summer job he loves! I am truly blessed and Jesus deserves all the praise!" –JP, Internet ------------------------------------------------------------ 7/8/04: "I found your book to be very honest, well researched, and powerful. Recently, I received an e-mail from a woman who had visited our church. I remembered talking with her previously after service. She had been refreshed, stating that she had not heard the Word of God taught in a long time. In her e-mail, she indicated that she would like to come back, but that she had heard that Calvary Chapel pastors did not believe in psychotherapy. She indicated that if this were true, she 'could never attend such a church'. She has not returned. How sad that people will sacrifice the Word of God, which they admit is rare, because they cannot let go of psychology. "I have personally seen the effects of psychology in my own family. I have a close family member who has been in therapy with her psychiatrist for 15 years. Her doctor, who is not a Christian, in her words 'counsels her based on her Christianity' (I'm not sure how one effectively speaks of what he doesn't know or believe). I have watched this person leave their job due to stress (almost ten years ago), move in with her parents, take dozens of pills from a large organizer each day, and have every physical and emotional problem imaginable (by their accounts - depression, childhood sexual abuse that they only discovered at 40, anxiety, chronic fatigue, lime disease, and complete knee replacement on both knees at 50). "Enough of the bad news. I have been sharing about this issue from the Word, when applicable, over the last few months. This past Sunday I was teaching on 'the man of the tombs' from Luke 8. I conveyed many of the ideas I had gleaned from your book. The response was overwhelming. Some was negative, as expected. However, a large number of people want to stop taking drugs, get their children off of drugs, stop seeing their therapists, and trust the Lord." –JV, Internet ------------------------------------------------------------ 6/8/04: "Our pastor RAVED about this book, and he NEVER does that. Congrats to you!! :-) I am in the process of finishing your book. It is great... a lot of things I had always suspected!" –WF, Internet ------------------------------------------------------------ 4/22/04: "I know about the harm that psychology brings. I was once encouraged by a clinical psychologist that I needed to experience all my whims in order to find who I was. What a mess that led me into. Thank you again and may the Lord continue to give you insight so that you may minister to the body of Christ." –JO, Internet ------------------------------------------------------------ 4/19/04: "I do appreciate your passion for this issue. I have always believed that this issue with all these so called "Christian Psychologist" and wonder drugs, was just part of Satan's plan to deceive people. Our society has been deceived in believing lies instead of trusting in the Lord for our lives. We have taken old fashion conviction and turned into a medical field where we can take something to help us become oblivious to our sins, and our realization to the fact that we need a loving Savior, Jesus Christ, to save us and sanctify us. "…I do have several family members who are currently being deceived into believing that they were not fearfully and wonderfully made. So I praise your passion and your efforts." --MG, Internet ------------------------------------------------------------ 3/16/04: "I heard about your book Psychology Debunked on CSN radio, after reading it my life was changed. I knew that I wasn't getting better in AA, but didn't know why. Thanks for helping more scales fall from my eyes. God Bless." --EJ, Internet ------------------------------------------------------------ 2/5/04: "I have been trying to dissuade Christians from putting so much "faith" in psychology for years. "Since 1993 I have had an illness that Doctors cannot figure out. Extreme fatigue, constant muscle pain, (dull), nearly daily bouts with hypoglycemia, (below 50's), cognitive function problems, etc. I was persuaded to file for disability, due to the nature of this illness. I have to be careful with the amount of energy I expend, or my symptoms become more profound, lasting for a month or more. My first contact with the S.S.A. tells the whole story. The case workers first comment to me was that she was a "psyche" major. The practice of the S.S.A. follows this with a very high frequency. (My father, with 70% loss of vision from glaucoma, was initially told it was a psychological manifestation by the S.S.A. until irrefutable medical evidence prevailed!) "Millions of people are under the authority of medical, and non-medical workers that force a diagnosis of "depression", or "anxiety", upon them, that not only does not exist, but that they cannot defend themselves against... "I do believe that depression, and anxiety and stress can impair people to a point, and should not be rejected out-of-hand, and is valid in some cases. But I know you will agree with me when I say that this "psychology" is really abused by those who claim to have this "secret" knowledge!" --RS, Internet ------------------------------------------------------------ 1/20/04: "I am 36 [and] married… I come from a long line of mistreated, worldly, selfish, and irresponsible men. It comes down through my father's side. My father killed himself 20NOV98. He was diagnosed "Bipolar", and his brothers were also diagnosed with this and that. One of my uncles has not worked in nearly twenty years and, all the while, has been manipulating the system and watching my aunt work 2 and 3 jobs to keep them afloat. "I have been diagnosed "Bipolar" as well. I don't believe it. I think the whole thing is a lie. I have voiced this opinion to many, and each time I get, "Do you want to end up like your father?... Then take your medication." I was told that there is "overwhelming" evidence that people who take meds and see therapists and go to support groups lead more normal lives, and are less likely to commit suicide. I thought to myself "Were some of the home fellowships mentioned in the Bible actually 12 step programs?" Of course not! I don't consider going to meetings and taking pills for a theorized "chemical imbalance" to be a normal way to live. My employers, however, have required me to follow doctor's orders or be terminated. I understand that the other option was to straighten-up and fly right, which would also get the boss off my back. I wanted to do the latter, but everywhere I turned, except for the Bible, I was met with the same mind-set... "You are sick, and until God heals you, do what the doctors say." "At any rate, God says, "By His stripes you were healed". How about the "sound mind" passage? I have not met a single soul who agrees that psychology is hogwash... Until now! "I desperately want to know what you have to say in your book. I want to come out from under this awful pile of lies! "I am confused and angry because EVERYONE, Christians and the worldly, keep trying to steer me from what I think I know to be true. "I hope that God will bless your book, and spread it far and wide. I know in my heart that you are right! The Church needs this book. I WANT TO SEE MIRACLES!!!" --JF, North Dakota ------------------------------------------------------------ 1/11/04: "I just received your book yesterday evening and I am in chapter 11 already. I wanted to wait until I finished your book before I commented, but I barely can contain my excitement about what I am reading. I Pastor a church in a Rural area in Kentucky, where it is amazing how many people are seeing Therapists and on mind altering drugs prescribed by Psychiatrists. So many who do so, walk around in an almost robotic trance, that I know is a result of the drugs they are being prescribed. What hurts me even more; is many of them are professing Christians. "As a minister, I know that God's word holds the key to all of humanity's problems, yet I feel almost alone in my declaration and belief of this. Many people will say it, then turn everywhere else when a need arises in their life. Having had Psychology in college, and being a foster adoptive parent as well as a student of scripture, I have long seen the hypocrisy, physical and spiritual danger of buying into the lie of Psychology. A few months ago I began to sense the need to expose this lie to my congregation and began to search for materials to help me in my endeavor. I found nothing about the dangers of Psychology in my local Christian book store, so I began to search the internet. I found very few websites willing to take on this lie, and those that did, though I was certain were correct, did not have the credentials I was looking for to make it credible for any skeptics I might encounter. Then Praise God, I found your website and ordered your book. I cannot praise God enough for you and your husband’s boldness to take this mega business and their lie on. Thank you for loving God enough to turn your back on your education and career for the truth. I know it must have been very hard for both of you, but Praise God you did! "I also want to commend you on your knowledge and insights of God's word. I worried when I ordered your book how knowledgeable in His word you would be, but my concerns were ended within just a few pages of your book. Your love, knowledge and boldness is such a blessing to me." –JB, Kentucky
